The Boss VE-8 Acoustic Singer is a compact all-in-one preamp and effects unit made by Boss, built for the acoustic guitarist who sings. It takes two signals at once, your voice through an XLR mic input and your acoustic guitar through its own dedicated channel, and processes each with its own effects, EQ and feedback controls, then adds a looper and vocal harmonies on top12. Boss describes it as tailor-made for acoustic guitarists, and its buying guide names the target player directly: acoustic guitarists who sing, singer-songwriters, and solo performers who want vocal and guitar effects with looping2.

It was announced at Musikmesse in April 2016 and went on sale in May 2016, priced at £269 in the UK at launch3. It sits in Boss's vocal pedal line alongside units like the Boss VE-2 Vocal Harmonist and the Boss VE-500 Vocal Performer, but the VE-8 is the one built around a guitar channel as well as a voice channel.

What the VE-8 does for voice and guitar

The vocal side carries what Boss calls studio-quality vocal processing with ambience effects, real-time vocal harmonies, and a doubling effect2. The harmonies are the headline feature for most players: the VE-8 generates them in real time based on your guitar input, with automatic key detection, or from a manual key setting if you would rather set it yourself2. MusicRadar's launch coverage counted a choice of four harmonies, plus a basic reverb, electronic and distorted vocal sounds, and an Enhance setting that Boss says adds "clarity and control"3.

The guitar side gets its own dedicated channel, with Boss saying your acoustic will sound "just as great as your vocals"1. Guitar effects include reverb plus a separate effect, nominally chorus, but Trevor Curwen found that slot also offers tremolo, delay and phaser4,4. A built-in tuner covers both jobs3.

Both channels share the same shaping tools, which matters for a solo performer working with a PA53:

  • Three-band EQ on the vocal channel and the guitar channel5
  • Low-cut filter on both channels5
  • Acoustic Resonance dial, which Boss claims removes piezo "quack"3
  • Notch filter for feedback control2
  • Phase invert2
  • Notch control for fine-tuning your tone3

MusicRadar's reviewer came away with a positive view of the whole package, and of how quickly a newcomer can get going34:

"Even for effects novices, the VE-8 is intuitive and easy to use straight out of the box"
Trevor Curwen, MusicRadar review4

The controls

Three footswitches control the action4. The first operates a chorus effect for guitar, and when pressed and held it mutes the signal and calls up the tuner4. A dedicated footswitch controls the built-in looper3.

The VE-8 also has two ways of working. In Stomp mode, the sound is set by the position of the knobs, like a conventional pedal4. For players who want repeatable setups, memory mode holds 50 favorite settings2, and Boss frames the 50 memory locations in performance terms: save a setup per song and recall it instantly while performing6.

The looper

The looper was designed specifically for this unit rather than borrowed from another pedal. It gives you 80 seconds of recording time2 and lets you choose what you are looping: guitar, voice, or both, selected via panel buttons or an optional footswitch57. That last part is the practical detail for a solo act, since choosing voice-only or guitar-only loops mid-performance without bending down is what makes a two-channel looper usable live.

Inputs, outputs and USB

The rear panel carries the full set of connections: a guitar input, an XLR mic input with switchable phantom power (so condenser mics work without a separate supply), and an Aux input5. On the output side there are stereo XLR and 1/4-inch outputs for integration with PAs and acoustic amps3, which Boss describes as flexible connections for PA and monitors2.

The USB port connects the VE-8 to a computer for recording2, part of the pedal's flexible connections for PA and monitors alongside its stereo XLR and 1/4-inch outputs3.

Questions

Does the Boss VE-8 run on batteries?

Yes. The VE-8 runs on 6 AA batteries or the included AC adapter, so it works on a stage without wall power. Battery operation is one of the features Boss highlights for acoustic players and solo performers who move around between venues.

Does the VE-8 have phantom power?

Yes. The rear panel has an XLR mic input with switchable phantom power, so you can use a condenser mic that needs it, alongside the guitar input and an Aux input for backing tracks or other sources.

Can the VE-8 make vocal harmonies from my guitar playing?

Yes. The VE-8 produces real-time vocal harmonies based on your guitar input, with automatic key detection, or you can set the key manually. There is a choice of four harmonies plus a vocal doubling effect.

Does the VE-8 have a looper?

Yes. It has a specially designed looper with a dedicated footswitch and 80 seconds of recording time. You can select guitar, voice, or both as the looping source via panel buttons or an optional footswitch.

Can I use the VE-8 as a USB audio interface?

Yes. The VE-8 connects to a computer over USB for recording, and MusicRadar's launch coverage noted you can use it as an interface via USB at home. Boss has kept the USB driver current, with a Windows driver update adding Windows 11 support in December 2021.

How many presets can the VE-8 store?

The VE-8 has a memory mode with 50 memory locations for saving and recalling setups. Boss positions this for performers: save a setting per song and recall it instantly on stage.
