The Catalinbread Belle Epoch is a compact delay pedal that takes the Maestro Echoplex EP-3, what Catalinbread calls "perhaps the most famous tape delay ever," and rebuilds it as a stompbox with no tape to wind, wear or clean1. The circuit is analog, and RockBoard's PedalPedia describes the result as having "tape echo sounds so authentic you'd swear there was tape inside the pedal"2. It carries over the EP-3's preamp character along with its echo, so the pedal colors your tone the way the original unit did even when the repeats are quiet.

The original compact edition arrived in 20153, and the line has since grown into a family of Echoplex-derived pedals, including the larger Belle Epoch Deluxe and the tap-tempo Belle Epoch Plus. Guitar.com listed the Belle Epoch at $209 in a June 2025 review4.

What it does: an analog take on the Echoplex EP-3

The Belle Epoch is built around the EP-3's behavior rather than just its delay sound. Catalinbread modeled the controls on the original unit: the Echo Volume control "replicates the functionality of the Echo Volume control on the EP-3 and uses the same basic passive mixer" as the tape machine1. The Rec Level control sets how hard the delay line is hit, affecting only the first repeat and leaving your dry signal alone, which is how the EP-3's record level behaved1.

The echo also responds to real-time knob moves like a tape machine. When you turn the Echo Delay control with the sustain up, the echo sound "lags" a bit, "much like how the Echoplex behaves when you move the slider back and forth"1. That lag is part of the EP-3 playing style, and the pedal reproduces it deliberately.

The controls

ControlWhat it does
Echo DelaySets delay time from about 80ms up to 800ms; designed to be turned while playing, like moving an EP-3 slider1
Echo SustainControls how much delay signal is fed back for multiple repeats1
Rec LevelSets how hard the "tape" or delay line is hit; affects only the first repeat, not the dry signal1
ModSets the amount of random tape wow and flutter in the echoes; at minimum there is none, and 9:00 to 10:00 is a sweet spot for realistic warble1
MixBlends the echo signal with your dry signal1
Echo VolumeReplicates the EP-3's Echo Volume control using the same basic passive mixer circuit1

Catalinbread gives a few setup pointers worth knowing. With very short delay times, keep the Mod control low for the most realistic tape sound; longer delay times tolerate much more modulation. And if you run the pedal into an overdriven amp or a dirt pedal, set the Mix lower, because compression in the chain brings up the level of the repeats1.

Inside the box, a trimpot sets gain and volume, as Huw Price noted in his Guitar.com review of the pedal7. This is the one internal adjustment on the original Belle Epoch, and it lets you match the preamp's output to the rest of your rig.

Power: 9V to 18V, 70mA

The Belle Epoch runs on a 9 to 18V DC negative ground supply that can deliver a minimum of 70mA1. There is no battery option: Catalinbread states it plainly on the product page1.

Voltage choice changes the character. Catalinbread recommends trying the pedal at both 9 and 18 volts to see which you prefer, and says that for the best Echoplex-like response, run it at 18 volts1. Huw Price's Guitar.com review adds that the pedal accepts 9v to 18v, with higher voltages providing extra clean headroom for higher input levels after boosts7.

The Belle Epoch draws enough current and needs a specific polarity that a standard battery is out of the question. Use a dedicated 9 to 18V DC negative ground output on your power supply, not a daisy chain shared with pedals that want center-positive or AC power1.

History and versions

The Belle Epoch launched in 2015 as the original compact edition38. Catalinbread later expanded the line with the Belle Epoch Deluxe, which appeared in the video "Tape Echo: Echo Fix EF-X2 meets Vintage Roland RE-201… And Others," published 26 Jul 20198.

The line's later versions each push the concept further:

  • The Belle Epoch Deluxe is a stereo pedal that Delicious Audio describes as "an exact reproduction of the iconic 1970's Maestro Echoplex EP-3, the only difference is that there is no tape!" It extends the max delay time to 800ms, draws 200mA, and adds an internal tunable repeats trimpot, an internal bypass type switch and a 1/4" TRS expression input91011.
  • The Belle Epoch Plus, announced in November 2025, adds full tap tempo by holding the footswitch, a Tape FX modulation control, a tape saturation circuit in the REC LEVEL knob that emulates the EP-3's crunch, up to ~900ms of delay, and increased headroom. Catalinbread also changed the Mix behavior: on the original Belle Epoch the Mix control stayed active in buffered bypass, and on the Plus it no longer does121314.
  • The Epoch Pre EP3 Preamp Buffer strips the concept down to just the EP-3's preamp circuit in a small buffer pedal15.

The Belle Epoch Deluxe also appeared in That Pedal Show's tape echo comparison episode alongside the Echo Fix EF-X2 and a vintage Roland RE-201, published 26 July 20198.

What reviewers said

Reviewers have consistently praised the Belle Epoch's authenticity. Eric Johnson has said of the pedal that it is "the closest thing to a real EP-3 that I've ever played"16.

Huw Price's Guitar.com review examined the pedal alongside Catalinbread's Topanga, noting the internal gain and volume trimpot and the headroom benefit of running it at 18 volts7.

Of the Deluxe version, gearnews.com wrote on first listen to the demo that it "does sound pretty much exactly like an original Echoplex"17, and Pedal of the Day called it "a wonderfully reliable and sonically accurate portrayal of one of the most recognizable delays in the history of music," praising its tour-tough metal chassis and real-time delay switching across its 80ms to 800ms range11. Premier Guitar's reviewer, covering the Deluxe, noted that its Echo knob sets delay time from 80 to 800 ms, the same range as an original EP-3, and that its depth knob controls the intensity of the various modulation functions18. Delicious Audio added the Deluxe to its best tape delay pedals list in April 20249.

Questions

Can the Belle Epoch run on a battery?

No. Catalinbread states plainly that the Belle Epoch cannot run on batteries. It needs a 9 to 18V DC negative ground power supply delivering at least 70mA, so plan on a spot on a pedalboard power supply rather than a battery clip.

Is the Belle Epoch true bypass?

Yes. The pedal ships in true bypass mode, but it can be switched to a trails mode in which the repeats trail out naturally when you turn it off. Catalinbread recommends trying both settings, since the buffered path keeps the Echoplex-style preamp in your signal.

Does the Belle Epoch have tap tempo?

The original Belle Epoch does not have tap tempo. Delay time is set with the Echo Delay knob, which Catalinbread designed to be manipulated in real time while playing, the way EP-3 players moved the slider. The later Belle Epoch Plus adds tap tempo via a hold on the footswitch.

What does the internal trimpot on the Belle Epoch do?

Inside the box, a trimpot sets gain and volume. It lets you balance the pedal's output and preamp character against the rest of your rig without touching the external controls, and it is the one adjustment that requires opening the enclosure.

What is the maximum delay time on the Belle Epoch?

Catalinbread lists the maximum delay time as approximately 700ms. The Echo Delay knob sweeps from about 80ms up to 800ms, matching the range of an original EP-3, and the echo sound lags slightly when you move it, just like a real Echoplex.
