The DigiTech X-Series DF-7 Distortion Factory is a digital distortion pedal that packs seven different drive circuits into one box. Rather than one fixed sound, it models seven classic stompboxes: the Ibanez Tube Screamer, the DOD Overdrive/Preamp 250, the Boss DS-1, the Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, the Pro Co Rat, the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff and the DigiTech Metal Master1. Josh Scott of JHS Pedals describes it as a pedal that "let you digitally emulate seven different analog distortion pedals," and calls it a DSP pedal from 20052.

The seven models

Each mode is based on a well-known circuit. RockBoard's listing describes the pedal as capturing "the tonal nuances, drive, and vibe" of the Ibanez TS-9, DOD Overdrive/Preamp 250, Boss DS-1, Pro Co Rat and the rest of the seven1. MusicRadar's review frames the pitch as "packing seven of the world's greatest distortion sounds inspired by all those Boss, DOD and Electro-Harmonix pedals"3.

The controls

The DF-7 departs from the single tone knob of most distortions with a four-knob tone section. MusicRadar lists the controls as "low (bass), mid, mid frequency and high (treble)"3, giving it a semi-parametric midrange you can sweep as well as cut or boost.

How the high control behaves depends on the model selected:

  • On the TS-9, Boss DS-1 and Big Muff models, the high control acts as an overall tone, just like on the original pedals3
  • On the Pro Co Rat model, the high control works like the Filter control on the real deal3
  • In Big Muff mode, the three-band section allows bass, mid and treble tone control where the original had a single tone knob2

Josh Scott is emphatic about that last point: "it allows for bass, mid and treble tone control... That's a game changer."2

Outputs and recording

Beyond the standard amp output, the DF-7 features Flexible Output Mode with a choice of six stereo spectrums and DigiTech's CIT cabinet modeling technology1. DigiTech's product information says this "gives you the flexibility to run either directly into a mixer or recording device utilizing the DF-7's cabinet mode," or into amps in stereo or mono1. Josh Scott puts it more bluntly: "The DF-7 also features a mixer output with an amazing cab sim."2

The DF-7 draws 300mA at 9V DC, center negative1. That is a heavy draw for a single pedal, so it needs its own power supply output rather than a shared daisy chain.

What reviewers said

MusicRadar's review team called the pedal's fuzz coverage a highlight, writing that "the Distortion Factory just makes it easier to bag yourself a wide range of essential fuzz sounds," naming the Boss DS-1 and Big Muff models in particular3. Josh Scott, in a longer history of DigiTech's lineup, is warmer still: "The DF-7 Distortion Factory in particular is a pedal that I have used on my pedalboard for years. I think it's phenomenal."2

Where it sits in DigiTech's history

The DF-7 belongs to DigiTech's X-Series, a range whose approach MusicRadar notes was "repeated across the X-Series in its entirety"43. Josh Scott considers the Factory series "a stepping stone from the Digitech X series" that led to the Hardwire series2. For players exploring the wider lineup, DigiTech's X-Series also included the Tone Driver and Screamin' Blues, and the company later produced pedals such as the FREQOUT.

Questions

Is the DigiTech DF-7 Distortion Factory analog or digital?

It is a digital pedal. RockBoard's product listing lists the circuit type as digital, and Josh Scott of JHS Pedals describes it plainly as a DSP pedal from 2005. That means the seven distortion models are digital emulations of analog originals rather than analog circuits themselves, which is what allows one pedal to cover seven different drive designs and add cabinet modeling on top.

Which pedals does the DF-7 model?

Seven: the Ibanez Tube Screamer (TS-9), the DOD Overdrive/Preamp 250, the Boss DS-1, the Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, the Pro Co Rat, the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi and the DigiTech Metal Master. Josh Scott of JHS Pedals lists all seven, and RockBoard's listing names the same circuits as the tonal reference points for each mode.

Can the DF-7 go straight into a mixer or recording interface?

Yes. DigiTech's product information says the DF-7 can run directly into a mixer or recording device using its cabinet models, or into an amp in mono or stereo. The mixer output carries a cabinet simulation, so you can record without a microphone on a cabinet.

How much current does the DF-7 draw?

RockBoard's listing gives a current draw of 300mA at 9V DC, center negative. That is well above what most one-spot style daisy chains supply per output, so plan on a dedicated power supply output for this pedal.

Does the DF-7 have a stereo output?

Yes. The pedal's Flexible Output Mode offers a choice of six stereo spectrums, so it can run into an amp rig or recording setup in stereo, or in mono if you prefer.

What came after the X-Series in DigiTech's lineup?

Josh Scott of JHS Pedals considers the Factory series, which the DF-7 belongs to, a stepping stone from the DigiTech X series that led to the Hardwire series. The X-Series design approach was repeated across the range in its entirety, according to MusicRadar.
