The Dr. No Effects DJINN is a handmade guitar effect described by its maker as sitting between a booster and a fuzz, one that accentuates the properties of the instrument without coloring the signal. Dr. No frames it with the question "Is it a booster? Is it a fuzz? No, it's the Djinn."1 The maker describes the effect as an enriching boost and tone effect, and says that with it "Hidden treasures surface, tone becomes much clearer, instruments become more dynamic, and formerly unknown features are brought out of your guitar, amp or other effects."1

From a bass guitar circuit to a pedal

The DJINN did not start as a pedal. According to Dr. No, the first and only version of the circuit existed exclusively inside a build of Alain Johannes' bass guitar, made by luthier Tom Pugi of T.P. Customs in London, before it was released as a guitar effect.124 Dr. No describes the circuit as based on a simple circuit from previous Laboratory prototypes, developed to the next level for the release.2

The pedal is credited to Dr. No and Alain Johannes together, with Dr. No handling the design, technical and aesthetic work, the story concept, hand silkscreening and hand assembly.2 Dr. No describes Johannes as a "friend and fellow magician" and says that soon after the bass build, "in cooperation with friend and fellow magician Alain Johannes, the DJINN was released."5

The Sorcière trilogy and the 350-unit run

The DJINN is the second effect in a trilogy project named Sorcière, which Dr. No says he worked on for almost four years.24 The trilogy's three effects are based conceptually and tone-wise on the occult, sorcery and myths, and the DJINN and the NecroFuzzIcon are sold exclusively through the Dr. No Effects website.3

Production is deliberately small:

  • In total only 350 DJINN units will be handmade.12
  • Each DJINN is handcrafted one by one, hand silkscreened, hand assembled, and numbered and signed by Dr. No.32
  • The Sorcière collection was also offered as a special limited collectors edition of 666 copies in total, 222 copies of each of the three parts.3

The DJINN is a limited series sold only through Dr. No's own webshop, not through dealers. Once the 350 handmade units are gone, the maker gives no indication of further runs.132

Power and practical use

Dr. No states that "The Djinn uses 9v regular powersupply, and has a built in noise filter."1 The built-in noise filter is worth noting for a boost-style effect: anything that lifts the level in front of an amp also lifts the noise floor, and the maker has built the filtering into the pedal rather than leaving it to a separate noise gate. The maker gives no current draw figure, so a standard pedalboard supply rated for typical analog pedals is the reasonable choice.

Because the DJINN is described as accentuating what the instrument and amp already do rather than coloring the signal, it sits in a different corner of the maker's range from its full fuzz pedals such as the SkullFuzz Original, and players comparing it with other circuits may also want to look at the wider fuzz and boost categories.

Questions

Who is Alain Johannes and what was his part in the DJINN?

Alain Johannes is the musician the DJINN was built around and released with. The circuit first existed only inside a bass guitar made for Johannes by luthier Tom Pugi of T.P. Customs in London, and Dr. No then released it as a guitar effect in cooperation with him. Dr. No describes Johannes as a friend and fellow magician, and the pedal is credited to Dr. No and Alain Johannes together, with Dr. No handling design, handcrafting, silkscreening and assembly.

What is the Sorcière trilogy from Dr. No Effects?

Sorcière is a trilogy project of three effects that Dr. No worked on for almost four years, based conceptually and tone-wise on the occult, sorcery and myths. The DJINN is the second effect in the trilogy, after the NecroFuzzIcon. The DJINN and the NecroFuzzIcon are sold exclusively through the Dr. No Effects website, and the trilogy was offered as a limited collectors edition of 666 copies in total, 222 of each part.

Does the Dr. No DJINN have a noise filter?

Yes. Dr. No states that the DJINN has a built-in noise filter, alongside its use of a regular 9v power supply. That matters for a boost and tone effect, since any gain added in front of an amp can also raise the noise floor, and the built-in filter is meant to keep that in check without extra pedals.

How many Dr. No DJINN pedals were made?

Dr. No states that in total only 350 DJINN pedals will be handmade. Each one is handcrafted one by one, hand silkscreened, and numbered and signed. Within the wider Sorcière trilogy, the combined collectors edition was capped at 666 copies, 222 of each of the three parts.

What power supply does the DJINN use?

The DJINN uses a regular 9v power supply, according to Dr. No. The maker also notes the pedal has a built-in noise filter. No current draw figure or battery option is given by the maker, so a standard 9V DC center negative supply is the safe assumption for pedalboard use.
