The Eventide H90 Dark Harmonizer is a limited-run, exclusive edition of Eventide's H90 multi-effects pedal, finished in a dark look that sets it apart from the standard version. RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it as bringing "Eventide's most powerful effects pedal in a bold new look"1. Under the finish it is the same platform: a digital multi-effects pedal carrying 66 effect algorithms and hundreds of Program combinations curated for a variety of instruments and genres1.

For a player, that means one box covering a wide range of effects, from pitch and harmonizer sounds to delay, reverb, modulation and more, with comprehensive I/O and flexible routing options. Eventide positions the H90 as "designed to be the heart of your rig"1, and reviewers have treated it that way: Bass Musician Magazine's review of the H90 was titled in part "How I Cut My Pedalboard In Half"1.

What it is and what it does

The H90 Dark Harmonizer is a multi-effects pedal: instead of one effect circuit, it runs software algorithms, and you select and combine them from the front panel. The Dark edition carries 66 effect algorithms, where the standard H90 Harmonizer listing carries 6221, and hundreds of Program combinations curated for a variety of instruments and genres1. Programs are the pedal's ready-made combinations of algorithms and settings, so a player can move between complete effect setups rather than dialing each parameter from scratch.

The standard H90's 62 algorithms were described by Guitar World's Trevor Curwen as "new enhanced versions of all 52 from the H9 Max, plus 10 new ones"4, which gives a sense of the lineage: the H90 took the full H9 Max library, upgraded it, and added new algorithms on top.

The pedal is fully digital. Its architecture is ARM-based and derived from Eventide's flagship H9000 Harmonizer rack processor5, a machine Gearnews describes as "a digital effects processor" in its own right. Premier Guitar's review of the H90 noted that "the H90's architecture is rooted, to some extent, in that of the H9000 Harmonizer"67.

Controls, connections and power

The H90's front panel gives you five push-turn knobs and seven LED buttons, which Guitar World's NAMM 2023 demo coverage described as allowing "for more tactile control"8. The push-turn design means each knob both selects and adjusts, keeping the panel compact for a pedal with this many parameters.

Connections are extensive for a pedal:

ConnectionDetail
InputsStandard input 1, 2, 3, 44
OutputsStandard output 1, 2, 3, 44
Expression / controlEXP/CTL 1 and 24
CV/expression2 CV/EXP inputs3
USBYes4
MIDIMIDI In, MIDI Out/Thru34

Those four inputs and four outputs allow various mono and stereo modes of operation4, and Delicious Audio describes the H90 as having "true stereo I/O and deep MIDI control"59. The pedal is fully MIDI programmable10, and Bass Musician Magazine's Jonathan Moody noted that "while the H90 is fully MIDI programmable, you might not need a controller for this"10, meaning the front panel alone can cover a lot of ground. Guitar World listed software editing among the H90's pros4, and the pedal also includes a built-in tuner5.

The H90 needs 12V DC, center negative, at 600mA1. That is more current than most compact pedals draw, so it requires a power supply or isolated output rated for 12V at 600mA or more. A standard 9V pedal supply will not run it.

History and versions

The H90 Harmonizer arrived in late 2022 as Eventide's next-generation multi-effects pedal11, the successor to the popular H91112. Guitar World's demo coverage put it simply: "It's like the H9 but updated"8. It is larger than its predecessor and comes with a revised control layout13.

The Dark Harmonizer is the limited-run edition of that pedal, and the standard H90 remains available as the H90 Harmonizer. The maker's manual for the H90 is published online, with the Dark edition's listing pointing to manual version 1.9.41 and the standard H90 listing pointing to version 1.7.52; the pedal's software has continued to evolve since launch.

The H90's own family history runs deeper. Its ARM-based architecture was derived from Eventide's flagship H9000 Harmonizer11, and the H9 line it replaced has itself moved on: in June 2026 Eventide launched the H9 Harmonizer Gen 2, which MusicRadar reports carries 74+ algorithms including the full H90 and H9 Max libraries with 1,000+ presets11146, and which Pedal of the Day describes as including "the full [H90] and [H9 Max] libraries"11146. The Gen 2 also runs on 9 to 12V DC at lower current draw than the H90, 300mA at 12V or 400mA at 9V, with a 12V 1A power supply included151.

The H90 platform is the larger, more fully featured pedal of the two, with four inputs and four outputs and two CV/expression inputs34, while the H9 Gen 2 packs the combined algorithm libraries into the smaller single-core H9 format. Guitar.com's review of the Walrus Mako M1 MkII, comparing alternatives, called the Eventide option "big, brilliant and eye-wateringly expensive"17, a reminder that the H90 sits at the top end of pedal prices. The H90 is made in China4.

Questions

What is different about the H90 Dark Harmonizer?

The H90 Dark Harmonizer is a limited-run, exclusive edition of Eventide's H90 multi-effects pedal. Eventide describes it as bringing the company's most powerful effects pedal in a bold new look. The core feature set matches the H90 platform, with 66 effect algorithms and hundreds of curated Program combinations, so the main difference is the finish and the limited availability.

Does the H90 have a built-in tuner?

Yes. The H90 includes a built-in tuner, so you can tune up without adding a separate tuner pedal to the board. It sits alongside the pedal's other utility features rather than being a separate purchase.

Does the H90 support MIDI?

Yes. The H90 has MIDI In and MIDI Out/Thru connections and is fully MIDI programmable. Reviewers have noted that because the pedal offers deep MIDI control, you may not even need a separate MIDI controller to get a lot out of it.

Is the H90 analog or digital?

The H90 is digital. It uses a modern ARM-based architecture derived from Eventide's flagship H9000 Harmonizer rack processor, which is itself a digital effects processor. All of its 66 effect algorithms run on that digital platform.

What power supply does the H90 need?

The H90 runs on 12V DC, center negative, with a current draw of 600mA. That is higher than most compact analog pedals, so it needs a power supply or isolated output rated for 12V at 600mA or more, and it rules out a standard 9V pedal supply.
