The TC Electronic Hall of Fame 2 Mini is a compact digital reverb pedal from TC Electronic, introduced in December 2019 as the successor to the original HOF Mini12. It is built on the same Mini platform as TC's Ditto Looper and PolyTune Mini, so it takes up very little pedalboard space, and it keeps the hall reverb sound the family is known for while adding a pressure-sensitive MASH footswitch and next-generation onboard algorithms12.

Out of the box it comes configured as a hall reverb, with three knobs, Decay, Tone and Level, shaping the time, color and blend of the effect23. Beyond the stock sound, it is TonePrint enabled: room, cathedral and a new shimmer reverb are available, along with algorithms ported from TC's studio System 6000 processor and artist-programmed presets4.

The controls: Decay, Tone, Level and MASH

The pedal has three knobs in an updated layout compared with the single-knob original Mini1. Guitar.com's Cillian Breathnach described what each does at launch:

"The Hall of Fame 2 Mini comes with three knobs: decay, tone and level. These control the time, colour and blend of the effect."3
ControlWhat it does
DecaySets the reverb time, how long the tail rings out3
ToneSets the color of the reverb, darker to brighter3
LevelSets the blend of the effect against your dry signal3
MASH footswitchPressure-sensitive control over the reverb in real time27

The MASH footswitch is the headline change from the first Mini. TC describes it as controlled solely by how much pressure you apply to the depressed footswitch1. Guitar.com likened it to an external expression pedal in a far smaller footprint: pressing harder or softer on the held-down switch changes a reverb parameter in real time3. Guitar World's mini pedal guide noted it can be used for swells and other expression effects7.

Guitar World's reviewer, Trevor Curwen, found it genuinely useful live:

"That MASH feature is great for an extra layer of onstage expression, enabling the likes of spiraling your delay repeats..."2

Changing the reverb type: TonePrint

The stock sound is a hall reverb2, but the pedal is not locked to it. TC's TonePrint system lets you load a different reverb into the pedal as its sound, and the same app handles editing and the bypass choice8910. At launch, Guitar World reported the available reverbs included room, cathedral and a new shimmer, plus algorithms ported from TC's System 6000 processor4. Artist-programmed TonePrints are also part of the system, as they have been across the Hall of Fame line since the original pedal810.

Loading works through the free TonePrint app: you select a TonePrint and beam it to the pedal, which then stores that sound810. The same app is where you switch the bypass between true and buffered1.

Power and connections

Power comes from a 9V battery or a 9V DC adaptor, with a 30mA draw; the adaptor is not supplied2. That battery option is a change from the first-generation HOF Mini, which Premier Guitar's reviewer noted had no room for a battery inside and had to run off a 9-volt supply11.

Connections are a standard input and a standard output, so the pedal runs in mono2. Players who need stereo reverb have to move up the family: the full-sized Hall of Fame 2 has stereo inputs and outputs121314, and the Hall of Fame 2 X4 has both mono and stereo outputs121314.

The two published reviews disagree on where the pedal is made: Guitar World's review lists its origin as USA2, while Guitar.com's review describes it as a digital reverb pedal made in China5.

History and versions: from the first Hall of Fame Mini

The Hall of Fame 2 Mini is the smallest member of a line that now spans three generations and several sizes1215:

  • 2011: The original Hall of Fame reverb pedal, with multiple reverb types, stereo in and out, true bypass and TonePrint16911.
  • October 2013: The HOF Mini, a tiny version with a single level knob, true bypass and analog dry-through, its default sound TC's Hall reverb17181910.
  • 2017: The Hall of Fame 2, the second production model of the line, adding the MASH footswitch1520.
  • August 2019: The Hall of Fame 2 X4, a larger, more feature-packed version with three footswitches, tone controls and shimmer2122.
  • December 2019: The Hall of Fame 2 Mini, revamping the Mini to "2" status with MASH and the new algorithms42.

Gearnews described both the HOF 2 Mini and its launch partner, the Flashback 2 Mini delay, as smaller versions of existing effects23. Within the current range, the HOF 2 Mini sits below the Hall of Fame 2, which is larger and more expensive but lets you select several reverbs instantly from the front panel rather than loading them one at a time2.

What reviewers said

Guitar World's review of the HOF 2 Mini highlighted the MASH footswitch as a tool for onstage expression and listed its selectable true or buffered bypass and TonePrint editing among its features2. The magazine's earlier mini pedal guide summed it up as "a tiny little stomp that covers nearly any possible reverb flavor you might need"24, while noting that if you have the space for the larger version, it might be worth the upgrade7.

Guitar.com's Richard Purvis reviewed it as a digital reverb pedal and compared it against the Mooer R7 at £100, the Electro-Harmonix Oceans Eleven at £122 and the Boss RV-6 at £113 in UK pricing5.

Reviews of the family around it were broadly positive. Of the first HOF Mini, MusicRadar's Mike Astley-Brown cited its small footprint, the fact that it sounds as good as its full-sized sibling, and TonePrint editing as reasons to buy8, and Guitar World's 2013 review found its sonic performance identical to the full Hall of Fame, preserving the original tone with analog dry-through19. Of the larger Hall of Fame 2, MusicRadar's only criticism was that additional patch parameters lack knob control, which it called "but that's a minor complaint"25.

MusicRadar also published a video introducing the Hall of Fame 2, the pedal whose MASH footswitch and algorithms the Mini inherits262728:

Questions

Can you change the reverb type on the Hall of Fame 2 Mini?

Yes. Out of the box it is configured as a hall reverb, but it is TonePrint enabled, so you can load other reverbs into the pedal. Available options include room, cathedral and a shimmer reverb, plus algorithms ported from TC's System 6000 processor and artist-programmed TonePrints. The stock hall sound is what you get until you load something else.

How do you load a TonePrint on the Hall of Fame 2 Mini?

TonePrints are loaded through TC Electronic's TonePrint system. You pick a TonePrint in the free TonePrint app and beam it to the pedal, which stores it as the pedal's sound. The same app is also where you choose between true bypass and buffered bypass, and where TonePrint editing of parameters takes place.

Is the Hall of Fame 2 Mini true bypass?

It can be. The bypass is switchable between true bypass and a buffered bypass, and the choice is made via the TonePrint app rather than an internal switch. The buffered option can help drive long cable runs; true bypass leaves the dry signal untouched when the pedal is off.

Does the Hall of Fame 2 Mini take a battery?

Yes. Guitar World's review specifies power as a 9V battery or a 9V DC adaptor, with a 30mA draw, and the adaptor is not supplied. Note that the earlier HOF Mini had no room for an internal battery, so the battery option is a change for this second-generation Mini.

Is the Hall of Fame 2 Mini stereo?

No. Its connections are a standard input and a standard output, so it operates in mono. Players who need stereo reverb can look to the larger TC Electronic Hall of Fame 2 or Hall of Fame 2 X4, both of which offer stereo inputs and outputs.
