The Tech 21 Geddy Lee Amalgamation Signature Chorus is a chorus pedal made by Tech 21 and tailored specifically for bass. It was announced on 20 January 2026 and developed with Geddy Lee, the Rush bassist, and his longtime tech, Skully12. What sets it apart from a standard chorus is a Detune control that shifts the pitch of the choral voicing, plus a Deviate mode that adds an extra voice for a thicker, more pronounced effect1.

Geddy Lee describes the aim in his own words on the Tech 21 product page:

"Tech 21 worked with my tech, Skully, and I to produce a warm, ballsy, super flexible and dynamic chorus pedal"

A bass-friendly chorus with a Detune control

Chorus pedals built for guitar can thin out a bass signal, so the Amalgamation was engineered from the ground up for the low end. Tech 21 says the Detune control lets you adjust the pitch of the choral voicing, "adding sonic girth to create thick, lush, bass-compatible chorus"1. Gearnews called the result a capture of that "swirlicious" tone, with studio-quality modulation that preserves low-end integrity, in a roadworthy stompbox specifically engineered for bass4.

The pedal is housed in a compact enclosure, and Bass Musician Magazine noted that it offers "an unusual amount of flexibility to achieve a variety of chorus voicings" for its size2. Alongside the signature Detune control, it carries standard Speed and Depth controls that Gearnews says let you dial in everything from a gentle thickening to an outrageous swirl, plus a dedicated Level control4.

The controls and Deviate mode

Four controls, LEVEL, DETUNE, DEPTH, and SPEED, along with a Deviate mode, handle the effect's adjustments1.

ControlWhat it does
DetuneShifts the pitch of the choral voicing up or down. Increasing goes sharp, decreasing goes flat. At unity (12 o'clock) there is no pitch shifting. With Speed and Depth at minimum, it enables a chorus sound without modulation1
SpeedControls the speed of the modulation, from 0.2 Hz to 10 Hz1
DepthControls the depth of the modulation, becoming more "wobbly" as the setting increases1
LevelAdjusts the overall output level to guard against the typical volume drop when the pedal is engaged. Tech 21 notes this is not commonly found on chorus pedals1

The Detune knob is the unusual one. Gearnews describes it as subtly shifting pitch to create an enveloping shimmer4. Because it works independently of the modulation, a player can set Speed and Depth to their minimum and still get a chorus-style thickened tone from Detune alone, or push it further for pitch-shifted doubling1.

Deviate mode is the second signature feature. Engaging it alters the functionality of the Detune control and adds an additional voicing for even more depth. Tech 21 describes the result as sounding "as if 3 people are playing at the same time," and positions it as particularly useful for solos, where a more pronounced effect helps a bass line cut through1. Gearnews sums it up as adding a secondary voice for greater depth and complexity4.

Bass Magazine characterized the Speed and Depth pair as taking the modulation "from sober to slightly tipsy to downright 'wobbly'"3.

Power and size

The Amalgamation runs on a 9V alkaline battery, which is not included, or on an optional DC power supply, Tech 21 model #DC9, sold separately1. Bass Magazine confirms both options: battery not included, DC supply optional3.

Neither the battery nor the power supply comes in the box. If you plan to run the pedal on a board rather than a battery, the Tech 21 #DC9 supply is a separate purchase13.

The enclosure measures 3.75″ x 4.75″ x 2″, compact enough to sit alongside other pedals without eating much board space1. The pedal is designed and manufactured by Tech 21 USA, Inc.3.

Designed with Geddy Lee and his tech

Tech 21 worked directly with Geddy Lee and his tech, Skully, to develop the pedal1. It continues a partnership that began after Rush's R40 tour, when Geddy Lee wanted to streamline his gear for new projects and worked with Tech 21 on the GED-2112 signature rackmount SansAmp, first announced in 2017567. That design was later adapted into pedal form as the Geddy Lee YYZ Shape-shifter Signature SansAmp and the Geddy Lee DI-2112 Signature SansAmp, making the Amalgamation Chorus the chorus entry in the signature line.

As with the rest of the signature range, the controls are designed to give the player flexibility to obtain their desired sounds rather than to lock in one preset tone1.

Questions

Does the Geddy Lee Amalgamation Chorus run on a battery?

Yes. The pedal is operable with a 9V alkaline battery, which is not included with the pedal. It can also run on an optional DC power supply, Tech 21 model #DC9, which is sold separately.

What does the Deviate mode do?

Engaging Deviate mode alters how the Detune control works and adds an additional voicing for more depth. Tech 21 describes the result as sounding like three people playing at the same time, and it is particularly useful for solos where a more pronounced effect is wanted.

What does the Detune knob do on a chorus pedal?

Detune shifts the pitch of the choral voicing up or down. Increasing it raises the pitch sharp, decreasing it lowers the pitch flat, and at the 12 o'clock position there is no pitch shifting. With Speed and Depth at minimum it can produce a chorus-like sound without modulation.

Does the pedal come with a power supply?

No. The 9V alkaline battery and the DC power supply are both optional and neither is included. Tech 21 offers its model #DC9 power supply separately for players who prefer to run the pedal from a power source.

How fast can the Speed control go?

The Speed control sets the rate of the modulation from 0.2 Hz to 10 Hz. At the slow end the effect is a gentle thickening; at the fast end, combined with high Depth settings, it becomes what Tech 21 calls downright wobbly.

Who designed the Amalgamation Chorus?

Tech 21 worked with Geddy Lee and his tech, Skully, to design the pedal. It is the latest in a line of Geddy Lee signature gear from Tech 21 that began with the GED-2112 rackmount SansAmp in 2017.
