The Boss GT-1000CORE is a multi-effects processor from Boss that puts the complete internal tone processing of the flagship GT-1000 into a compact stompbox1. Released in October 2020 at $699.992, it is built for players who want the GT-1000's sound engine on a pedalboard alongside conventional pedals, or as a self-contained fly rig. Boss describes it as delivering "the most complete guitar and bass processing experience available in a single stompbox"3.
Under the hood it runs 24 simultaneous effects blocks, including two different amps at once, with numerous series and parallel routing options, and over 140 unique amp and effect types3. Sound quality comes from 32-bit AD/DA conversion, 32-bit floating-point processing and a 96 kHz sampling rate, with Boss's AIRD (Augmented Impulse Response Dynamics) technology providing the amp feel and integration with external gear3.
What the GT-1000CORE does
The GT-1000CORE is the GT-1000's engine in a smaller box. Performer Mag described it as Boss "taking their GT-1000 Multi-fx system and putting into the size of their 500 series of pedals"6. It handles amp and effect modeling, with 250 user patches for storing sounds, and Boss says there is ample room for every type of gig3.
The unit toggles between Memory mode, for recalling presets, and Manual mode, for kicking individual effects on and off3. A 1.75" x 4.35" LCD screen shows what is happening8.
For bass players, the GT-1000CORE is not guitar-only. Premier Guitar's launch coverage called it "ideal for both guitar and bass"2, and Boss lists a variety of AIRD bass preamps plus eight different overdrive/distortion effects for bass3.
Guitar World's reviewer, Trevor Curwen, summed up the unit's appeal:
"The Boss GT-1000Core might have fewer footswitches than its full-sized sibling but it doesn't lack for options7."
He found it a powerful tool as a fly rig, a recording tool, or part of a larger pedalboard, with a huge range of effects, send/returns and USB audio7.
The controls and footswitches
The front panel is deliberately minimal. Guitar World lists the controls as an Output Level knob, a Select knob, three footswitches, five soft knobs (numbered 1 through 5) and six buttons7. The three main footswitches are customizable for controlling presets and parameters, and Manual Mode adds another control layer for switching effects on the fly9.
External control is well covered. The GT-1000CORE supports external footswitches, expression pedals, USB and TRS MIDI3, and Premier Guitar's launch report noted that users can remotely switch amp channels this way2. Firmware version 3.2, reported by Guitar World in February 2022, added wireless EV-1-WL MIDI support along with 11 different mastering effects and more microphone types10.
Power and connections
The unit runs on the supplied PSB-1U power adaptor at 9V and 2A7, so it is not a battery pedal. It connects with other stomps via mono or stereo I/O3.
Two send/return loops are the key integration feature. Boss says they support external effects, the four-cable method with a real amp, or separate direct outputs to a PA or recorder1. Premier Guitar's launch coverage described the dual send/return jacks as supporting "external effects, four-cable method, or separate feeds to a PA or recorder"2.
Over USB, the GT-1000CORE works as a 6-in/6-out audio interface for recording and reamping, and connects to the free Boss Tone Studio editing software7. The Boss GT-1000 driver for Windows, and the macOS driver, can both also be used with the GT-1000CORE1112.
One retailer listing notes that the GT-1000CORE's Tone Studio app connection requires a separately purchased $50 Bluetooth adapter13. There is no Bluetooth built into the unit itself.
Firmware versions and new amp types
The GT-1000CORE has received substantial firmware updates since launch. The Version 2.0 update added three newly developed high-gain guitar amp types, six new bass preamps, two new drive effects and other enhancements3:
- X-Ultra: inspired by a classic British stack amp modified with a modern multi-stage gain circuit3
- X-Optima: a new gain algorithm taking full advantage of MDP's adaptive frequency shaping3
- X-Titan: aimed at aggressive metal styles, well suited to down tunings and seven- or eight-string extended-range guitars3
Later point releases fixed specific bugs. Version 2.01 (March 2026) fixed a bug in the processing that prevents mute when switching memories, and removed the polyphonic tuner function14. Version 2.02 (July 2026) fixed noise produced when switching patches without interrupting the sound under certain conditions, and added parameters to PLAY OPTION that disable the function triggered by pressing two switches simultaneously14.
If you depend on the polyphonic tuner, be aware that Boss removed it in firmware version 2.01. Updating past that version means losing it14.
How to update the firmware
Boss's procedure for a system update14:
- Download the system file (for version 2.02, the file is named gt1000core_sys_v202.zip) and unzip it.
- Hold down the WRITE button and turn on the power, continuing to hold until "GT-1000CORE Updater" appears on the display.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
You need the GT-1000CORE itself, a USB cable, and a Windows or Mac computer with a USB 2.0 compliant port14. To check your current version, hold down the EXIT button while turning the power on until the logo appears; the version information then shows on the display14.
Never power off the GT-1000CORE while an update is in progress. Boss warns that a power failure during the update will require servicing at a Roland service center14.
Price and the HX Stomp comparison
At launch in October 2020 the GT-1000CORE was priced at $699.99215, which Guitar World reported as $100 more than the Line 6 HX Stomp, a pedal it was widely seen as answering16. Performer Mag listed its street price at $699 in March 20216. In the UK, Guitar.com's Richard Purvis gave the price as £59917.

Questions
Does the GT-1000CORE work with bass?
Yes. Boss positions it as a guitar effects processor, but the company says it is ideal for both guitar and bass, with a variety of AIRD bass preamps for shaping core tone and eight different overdrive/distortion effects for bass. The Version 2.0 firmware update added six new bass preamps as well.
Can the GT-1000CORE be used as an audio interface?
Yes. A USB connection lets the unit work as a 6-in/6-out audio interface for recording and reamping, and it also gives access to the free Boss Tone Studio editing program. The Boss GT-1000 driver for Windows and macOS can also be used with the GT-1000CORE.
How do I update the GT-1000CORE firmware?
Download the system file from Boss, unzip it, then hold down the WRITE button and turn on the power, keeping it held until GT-1000CORE Updater appears on the display. You need the unit, a USB cable and a Windows or Mac computer with a USB 2.0 port. Never power off during the update; a failure requires servicing at a Roland service center.
Does the GT-1000CORE have Bluetooth?
No Bluetooth is built in. Editing is done over USB with the free Boss Tone Studio software. One retailer listing notes that wireless control requires a separately purchased Bluetooth adapter, and firmware version 3.2 added support for the wireless EV-1-WL MIDI connection.
Does the GT-1000CORE still have a polyphonic tuner?
No. Boss removed the polyphonic tuner function in firmware version 2.01, released in March 2026. Players who rely on a polyphonic tuner should keep this in mind before updating.
How does the GT-1000CORE compare in price with the HX Stomp?
At launch in October 2020 the GT-1000CORE sold for $699.99, which Guitar World reported as $100 more than the Line 6 HX Stomp. Performer Mag later listed its street price at $699 in March 2021.
