The Voes MX-12 (2x6) is a fully programmable MIDI foot controller in Voes' MX range, built around 12 buttons arranged in two rows of six12. It is aimed at players running rack and modeler gear from the floor: it transmits 68 different command types, including dedicated command sets for the Fractal Axe-Fx and FM3/FM9, the Kemper Profiler, and special commands for the Line 6 HX Stomp, Neural DSP Quad Cortex and IK ToneX1.

Voes positions it against Fractal's own controllers: the company describes it as smaller and much lighter than the FC-12 with the same number of buttons1. It measures 43 cm long, 17 cm wide and 6 cm high1. A sibling model, the Voes MX-12 3x4, offers the same 12 buttons in three rows of four3.

Buttons, pages and layers

Each of the 12 buttons works on two layers, Normal Press and Long Press, so a short press and a held press can send different things1. Each layer carries 6 commands, which can be transmitted either All In Once, meaning all six fire together, or Step-By-Step, meaning they fire in sequence1. Buttons can also be placed in groups where only one button in a group can be active at a time, which is how you would set up preset or scene selection1. Global buttons keep their On/Off state when you change programs, so a mute or tuner switch stays where you left it1.

The controller holds three pages of setups: Page A and Page B, both fully editable, and Page P, a presets page with a fixed layout1. Each button can show its name and On/Off status, saved across up to 100 presets, and the LEDs come in 7 different colors for telling pages and states apart at a glance1.

Command types and device sync

The 68 command types include 12 dedicated types for the Axe-Fx I, II and III and the FM3 and FM9, and 9 dedicated types for the Kemper Profiler1. For the Line 6 HX Stomp, Neural DSP Quad Cortex and IK ToneX there are special Tempo, Tuner and Looper commands1.

What the controller syncs back from the device depends on what you connect it to:

DeviceWhat syncs
Axe-Fx III, FM3, FM9Preset Name, Scene Name, Active Scene, FX Block On/Off state and selected Channel, Looper, Tuner, Tap Tempo1
Axe-Fx II (XL+)Preset Name, Scene Select, Looper, Tuner, Tap Tempo1
Kemper ProfilerPerformance Name, Rig Name, Stomp and FX states, Looper, Tuner, Tap Tempo1
Line 6 HX StompSnapshots, Looper, Tempo, Tuner1
Neural DSP Quad CortexScenes, Looper, Tempo, Tuner1

Because preset names sync with an Axe-Fx I, II, III or FM3, or with a Kemper Profiler, Voes says the controller's own presets become obsolete in those setups: the names come from the device rather than being stored on the pedalboard1.

Power and connections

There are three ways to power the MX-121:

  • A 9 to 12V power adapter with a 2.1mm plug1
  • Midi-7, using the Voes M-Box1
  • Ethercon, using the Voes V-Box1

With the V-Box or M-Box, power and MIDI run over one cable, which Voes pitches as the way to a clean setup: a single line from the pedalboard to the rack instead of a separate adapter feed1.

Three expression inputs are on board, with auto-engage so a pedal takes effect as soon as you move it, the option to swap expression CC numbers, and suitability for external switches as well as expression pedals1.

Editor software and presets

Programming is done in editor software for Windows and Mac, where you can also swap or copy buttons on the fly1. The editor handles the button names, command assignments and On/Off statuses stored in the 100 presets1.

Questions players ask

How does it compare with the Fractal FC-12? Voes describes the MX-12 (2x6) as smaller and much lighter than the FC-12 with the same number of buttons1. The 3x4 version of the MX-12 is described as similar in size to the FC-6 with double the buttons3.

How does the 2x6 differ from the 3x4? The two MX-12 models share the same feature set: 12 buttons, Normal Press and Long Press layers, the same command types, sync behavior, 100 presets, three pages, three expression inputs and the same power options13. The difference is physical: the 2x6 lays its buttons out in two rows of six, while the 3x4 uses three rows of four13.

Where does it sit in the MX range? The MX-12 2x6 is one of the MIDI controller models in Voes' MX range2. Other models in the range include the Voes MX, Voes MX-5, Voes MX-6, Voes MX-9, Voes MX-18 and Voes MX-EX, along with the Voes VF-Cable and Voes MF-Cable2. For more on the category, see MIDI pedals.

Questions

Does the Voes MX-12 sync preset names with the Axe-Fx III?

Yes. With an Axe-Fx III, FM3 or FM9 the MX-12 syncs Preset Name, Scene Name, Active Scene, FX Block On/Off state and selected Channel, plus Looper, Tuner and Tap Tempo. With an Axe-Fx II (XL+) it syncs Preset Name, Scene Select, Looper, Tuner and Tap Tempo. Because names are synced, the controller's own presets become unnecessary with these units.

Does the Voes MX-12 work with the Quad Cortex?

Yes. Voes lists special Tempo, Tuner and Looper commands for the Neural DSP Quad Cortex, and you can use scenes, Looper, Tempo and Tuner with it. The same special commands cover the Line 6 HX Stomp and IK ToneX.

How big and heavy is the Voes MX-12 compared to the Fractal FC-12?

Voes describes the MX-12 (2x6) as smaller and much lighter than the FC-12 with the same number of buttons. It measures 43 cm long, 17 cm wide and 6 cm high, and weighs 1.69 kg (3.73 lbs).

Can the Voes MX-12 be powered over one cable?

Yes, when paired with a Voes V-Box or M-Box. Power and MIDI can run over a single cable: Ethercon with the V-Box, or a 7-pin MIDI connection with the M-Box. A standard 9 to 12V power adapter with a 2.1mm plug is the third option.

How many expression pedals can I connect to the Voes MX-12?

Three. The MX-12 has 3 expression inputs with auto-engage and the ability to swap expression CC numbers, and they are also suitable for external switches.

Does the Voes MX-12 work with Kemper Profiler?

Yes. It offers 9 dedicated Kemper Profiler command types and syncs Performance Name, Rig Name, Stomp and FX states, Looper, Tuner and Tap Tempo. Preset names sync, so the controller's own presets are unnecessary in this setup.
