Mooer R7 Multiverb

ReverbDigital

The Mooer R7 Multiverb is a mini-format digital reverb pedal from Mooer, part of the company's New Micro Series. It squeezes seven reverb algorithms into a compact enclosure, covering the ground from traditional room and hall sounds to more ambient textures, and each of the seven modes has its own storable preset1.

The Mooer R7 Multiverb is a reverb pedal in a tiny enclosure that hardly takes up any space on a pedalboard2. Reviewers have described it as a fully-fledged reverb workstation and an extremely versatile reverb stompbox at a low price2.

A compact reverb with seven modes

The R7 packs seven types of reverb effects, from the "Church" to the "Cave"3. The seven modes are Room, Hall, Church, Cave, Plate, Spring and Mod4. Delicious Audio found that with seven different reverb sounds the R7 "caters for just about every ambient need", and noted that "the Mod mode can get pretty dreamy"2.

Each of the seven sounds has its own preset, giving the player seven modes and seven presets in one tiny enclosure that hardly takes up any space on a pedalboard2. The R7 differs from the A7 Ambience announced earlier in 2020 in that it leans toward more traditional reverb effects5.

The controls

The R7's reverb sounds are controlled by level, decay and pre-delay knobs, plus a dedicated high and low-cut EQ6. The Pre-DLY knob controls the amount of the reverb's pre-delay, the gap between your dry note and the onset of the reverb4. You can then go into deeper tweaking of each effect with the Decay and Pre-Delay controls1.

ControlWhat it does
LevelSets the reverb level6
DecaySets how long the reverb tail lasts61
Pre-DLYControls the amount of the reverb's pre-delay4
High/Low Cut EQDedicated high and low-cut EQ for the effect6

The built-in trail function can be switched between normal mode and "Trail On" mode, so the reverb either stops with the bypass or fades out naturally after you switch the pedal off3. Delicious Audio described this as a trail on/off option2.

The R7 and its X2 version

In August 2021 Mooer announced an expanded X2 Series version, the Mooer R7 X2, alongside the D7 X2 delay7. The R7 X2 takes the format of the R7 mini-multi-reverb and expands it inside a compact case, gifting it with twice as many ins and outs, modes and footswitches8.

The R7 X2 combines Mooer's algorithms from the A7 Ambiance and R7 Reverb pedals8, with 14 reverb types: the classic Room, Hall, Church, Cave, Plate, Spring and Studio, plus modern ambient modes including Mod, Reverse, Wrap, Shake, Crush, Shimmer and Dream9. Its 14 sounds are represented by seven LEDs, divided into conventional (yellow LEDs) and ambient (purple)11. Both pedals feature a Trail On mode for adjusting how the reverb fades out7.

The X2's controls add a Mix knob and a Save button to the high cut, low cut, decay and pre-delay knobs, along with infinite and bypass footswitches910. In the spring reverb algorithm, the Pre-Delay knob controls the length of the spring instead of pre-delay10.

What reviewers said

Gearnews found the R7 handled the practical side of reverbs well:

"I think this pedal can handle more than enough of the types of reverb I need when gigging or songwriting."
Jef, Gearnews, on the R71

Delicious Audio called the R7 "an extremely versatile reverb stompbox, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg either!"2. Guitar Pedal X, rounding up stereo reverb workstations, called the R7 X2 "a fantastic and really powerful Stereo Reverb Workstation, particularly as this form factor"12.

MusicRadar's review of the R7 X2 found it "competitively priced, stacked with 14 high-quality sounds with storable presets from a compact form", calling it "a serious stereo reverb pedal" that covers all bases from everyday ambience to super-dreamy soundscaping, and noting that every setting can go fully wet10. The same review positioned the X2's bigger reverbs as a cheaper and more compact alternative to the Electro-Harmonix Ocean Machine, especially if you have delay covered elsewhere on your pedalboard10. Guitar World's review agreed the X2 offers plenty of versatility1113, though its budget-reverb buying guide gave usability three and a half stars, finding the LED system clunky and not very intuitive while still packed with superb reverbs13.

Questions

How many reverb modes does the Mooer R7 have?

Seven. The R7 packs seven digital reverb effects, from the Church and Cave modes through to a Mod mode that reviewers found could get pretty dreamy. Each of the seven sounds has its own storable preset, so your settings for each mode are kept when you switch between them.

Does the Mooer R7 have trails?

Yes. The built-in trail function can be switched between normal mode and Trail On mode, so the reverb either cuts immediately when you bypass the pedal or fades out naturally after you switch it off. Trail On mode adjusts how the reverb fades out.

Does the Mooer R7 have a pre-delay control?

Yes. Alongside the level and decay knobs, the R7 has a Pre-DLY knob that controls the amount of the reverb's pre-delay, the gap between your dry note and the start of the reverb. This lets you keep the effect sitting behind your playing instead of smothering it.

What is the difference between the Mooer R7 and the R7 X2?

The R7 X2 is an expanded version with twice as many ins and outs, modes and footswitches. It has 14 reverb types instead of 7, full stereo operation with two inputs and two outputs, a second footswitch with an infinite function, and a larger enclosure. The original R7 is mono and mini-format.

Is the Mooer R7 stereo?

No. The original R7 is a mono mini-pedal. If you need stereo reverb, the R7 X2 version runs in mono or full stereo, with two inputs and two outputs, and combines the algorithms of the R7 Reverb and the A7 Ambience pedals.

How big is the Mooer R7?

The R7 measures 93.5mm deep by 42mm wide by 52mm high, the classic Mooer micro-pedal footprint. It hardly takes up any space on a pedalboard. The larger R7 X2 measures 75mm deep by 115mm wide by 33mm high.
