For a player, a reverb pedal does three practical jobs. It adds depth and color to a dry tone, as Animals Pedal describes for its Bath Time Reverb, a standard reverb pedal with two selectable reverb types1. It can push a clean sound into ambient territory, which is how ZCAT pitches its Big Reverb TI as "a good choice for creating lush ambient soundscapes"2. And it can replace or extend the reverb built into your amp, with more styles and more control than most amplifiers offer.
Reverb pedals come in every shape: simple one-knob boxes, multi-mode digital units, real-spring analog pedals, and hybrids that combine reverb with delay in one enclosure, like the VHT Echo-Verb, which puts delay and reverb in one pedal with two independent sections3. EarthQuaker Devices' own write-up of its Dispatch Master sums up the appeal of the combined format: "Reverb and delay in one pedal? SURE! Why not? This pedal does both, and it does them incredibly well"4.
What a reverb pedal does
Reverb is the persistence of sound after the original note stops. In a real room, sound bounces off walls, floor and ceiling, and those reflections arrive at your ear at slightly different times and with slightly different brightness. A reverb pedal recreates that effect electronically, blending a processed "wet" signal with your untouched "dry" guitar signal.
The character of the reverb depends on the simulated space and the circuit producing it. A short, dark reverb can make a dry amp feel like a small room; a long, bright reverb can make a single sustained chord feel like it is filling a hall. Makers describe the effect in the same terms players use: Ashdown calls its Cubicle "the ultimate pedal for adding reverb to your sound"5, and JET Pedals pitches the Revelation Reverb at players who want "huge, ethereal sounds"6.
Reverb also pairs naturally with other time effects. Delay into reverb is the classic ambient combination, and some pedals build both in, like the VHT Echo-Verb3 and EarthQuaker's Dispatch Master4. Others keep reverb pure and let you choose the companion yourself.
Analog and digital reverb

Most reverb pedals on the market are digital. Alexander Pedals states it directly for its range: "All of our delay, reverb, and modulation pedals are digital, using a 24-bit DSP architecture"7. A digital reverb uses a digital signal processor to compute the reflections, which allows long decay times, many styles in one pedal, and stereo output. The EBS DynaVerb Studio Edition is one example of a digital stereo reverb pedal8, and SONICAKE's Digital Reverb is another digital unit in a mini enclosure9.
Analog reverb exists, but it is a niche, and it almost always means springs. A spring reverb tank sends the guitar signal through physical springs; the wobble and splash of the springs is the sound. Anasounds' Element is described by its maker as "a true analog reverb using real springs!"10, and GUP Tech's Moby Depth is "basically a spring reverb, but with many adjustments that make it unique among other reverb guitar pedals"11.
Between the two sit hybrids. The Hermida Audio Reverb "has both analog and digital signal paths in order to maintain the warmth and response of the original signal"12: the dry signal stays analog while the reverb itself is digital. For players who worry that a fully digital pedal colors their core tone, this kind of design keeps the dry path untouched.
There is also a healthy DIY scene. Mod Electronics' The Verb is a reverb pedal kit based on the Belton Digi-Log module, a compact digital reverb brick that many builders use13. General Guitar Gadgets' D-VERB is a digital reverb project the maker calls "an excellent sounding reverb pedal, simple to build and compact for the pedal board"14. Griffin Effects' Ricochet PCB takes a different route entirely: a DIY board described as "a Class A FET emulation of the classic Fender 6G15 reverb," the tube-driven spring unit from vintage Fender amps15.
"Analog reverb" in a pedal almost always means a real spring tank. There is no practical analog circuit for hall or plate emulation at pedal size, so any pedal offering multiple studio-style spaces is digital, even when its dry path is analog.
Spring, plate and hall: the styles behind most reverb pedals
Three names cover most of what you will see on a reverb pedal's mode switch. They come from the studio and amp world, and each has a distinct character.
| Style | Where it comes from | What it sounds like on a pedal |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Physical spring tanks in guitar amps | The classic guitar-amp splash, with wobble and character |
| Plate | Studio plate reverb units | Smoother and denser than spring, a studio staple |
| Hall | Large concert spaces | Long, spacious tails suited to ambient playing |
Several current pedals put all three on one switch. Nobels' REV-mini is a compact reverb pedal with Spring, Plate and Hall modes16. Fishman's AFX AcoustiVerb carries Hall, Plate, and Spring reverb patches that Fishman says were "precisely tweaked" for the pedal17. Electro-Harmonix's Pico Oceans 3-Verb packs "the huge sounds of Spring, Plate, and Hall reverb" into a Pico-sized enclosure18.
Beyond the big three, makers add their own spaces and variations. MXR's M300 Reverb offers Plate, Spring, Epic, Mod, Room and Pad reverbs19. Marshall's RF-1 Reflector carries six reverbs: Hall, Plate, Room, two Spring simulations and a Reverse mode20. Alexander Pedals' Space Force pairs its Spring mode with a multi-wave tube bias type tremolo placed after the reverb21. Tech 21's Boost RVB Trails lets you custom tailor reverb styles such as spring, plate and natural room/hall ambiance22.
What the usual controls do
Reverb pedals range from one knob to a full control surface, but a few controls appear again and again.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Mix / Level / Reverb | How much reverb is blended with your dry signal |
| Decay / Time | How long the reverb tail rings out |
| Tone | The brightness or darkness of the reverb |
| Mode / Type | Selects spring, plate, hall or other styles |
| Pre-delay | A short delay before the reverb begins |

The mix control is the one every pedal has in some form. On the Quilter Wet Reverb Pedal v1, "the mix knob controls the reverb level": full counter-clockwise is completely dry with no reverb, and full clockwise is about a 50/50 blend of dry and reverb signal23. JET Pedals describes the Mix knob on the Revelation as controlling "the overall loudness of the reverb," minimum counter-clockwise, maximum clockwise6. Recovery Effects' Moonstruck has a reverb mix knob with, in the maker's words, "enough headroom to drench your instrument with vintage character"24.
Decay and tone shape the tail itself. Catalinbread's CBX Gated Reverb shows how a control can change meaning with context: its Verb knob "would control how long the reverb tail rings out" on a normal pedal, but because the pedal has a gate, it instead "governs the thickness of the reverb," from mild reverberation low to "a huge, harmonically rich reverb sound" maxed out25.
Pre-delay deserves a special mention because it is the control that keeps reverb from swallowing your attack. JET's Revelation has a three-position toggle for it: the middle position "will create a reverb with 50ms of pre delay"6, meaning the reverb starts 50 milliseconds after your note, leaving the initial pick attack clear before the space opens up.
Where reverb goes in the signal chain
Reverb is a time-based, space-creating effect, and it is typically placed at the end of the signal chain or in the amp's effects loop, which prevents the reverb from becoming distorted26. Neunaber recommends the same placement for its Seraphim: at the end of your chain, before or after another reverb, and in the effects loop if you are using the amp's overdrive channel27. Reviewer Dave Boonshoft orders a chain the same way: the first pedals should be the ones most sensitive to dynamics and input level, then dynamics pedals, then distortion and fuzz, with reverbs last28.

Quilter's manuals for the Neunaber Wet Reverb v5 and the Immerse Reverberator agree on placement: the pedal goes "at the end of your chain, after all other effects"3132. Both manuals add the same qualification: use the amplifier's effects loop if you are using the amp's overdrive channel27. The reason is that reverb before a distorting amp gets crushed along with everything else, so when the amp itself is the drive source, the reverb needs to sit after the preamp, which is exactly what an effects loop provides.
Volume pedal placement interacts with reverb too. Boss's guide notes the debate: a popular approach is a volume pedal at the start of the chain, or placed so that only reverb and delay come after it26. With reverb after the volume pedal, rolling back your volume swells the reverb tail rather than cutting it off abruptly.
Some reverb pedals include an internal effects loop switch. The Quilter Wet Reverb Pedal v1 has one that switches between series and parallel effects loops; in parallel mode only the reverb signal is present on the output, and the Mix knob adjusts the reverb level23.
Questions to ask when choosing a reverb pedal
With the catalog of reverb pedals running from mini one-knob units to stereo multi-mode machines, a few questions narrow the field quickly.

- Which styles do you actually need? If you want the amp-spring sound only, a dedicated spring pedal like the Anasounds Element10 or a spring-inspired unit like the Carl Martin HeadRoom Mini1033 covers it. If you want hall and ambient spaces too, a multi-mode pedal such as the Nobels REV-mini16 or EHX Pico Oceans 3-Verb343516 gives you the choice on a switch.
- How much control do you want? A single mix knob suits players who set reverb once and leave it. Separate decay, tone and pre-delay controls, like the JET Revelation's toggle-based pre-delay6, let you shape the tail to the part.
- Do you want reverb alone or combined? A combined delay-and-reverb pedal like the VHT Echo-Verb3 saves board space and guarantees the two effects interact consistently; separate pedals give you freedom to reorder or swap each one.
- Analog springs or digital processing? Real springs give the authentic wobble and respond to the amp and playing dynamics, but a digital pedal offers long decays, multiple styles and stereo output. The Hermida Audio Reverb's mixed analog and digital paths12 are one middle road.
- Mono or stereo? A stereo pedal like the EBS DynaVerb Studio Edition8 can feed two amps or a stereo rig, which changes how the reverb sits in the room.
- Build it yourself? Kits like the Mod Electronics Verb13 and the General Guitar Gadgets D-VERB14 cost less than finished pedals and teach you the circuit; Griffin Effects' Ricochet PCB15 goes further, emulating the classic Fender 6G15 spring unit.
Whatever the answer, the effect itself stays the same job it has always been: giving a dry electric guitar a room to live in. The Hotone Verbera36, the JOYO JF-317 Space Verb37, the JET Revelation in its current and V3 forms363738, and the rest of the type all approach that job with different circuits, but the question you are answering as a buyer is the same one: how much space, of what kind, under how much control.
Questions
Should a reverb pedal go before or after delay?
After. Delayed reverb can sound muddy, so Boss's effects guide recommends placing reverb after delay as the final link in the chain26. Delay, meanwhile, delivers cleaner and more even repeats when placed after distortion26. The result is a typical order of distortion, then delay, then reverb, with the looper last if you use one30.
Should I put my reverb pedal in the effects loop?
It depends on where your overdrive comes from. Quilter's manuals for the Neunaber Wet Reverb v5 and the Immerse recommend the end of your chain after all other effects, and specifically the amp's effects loop if you use the amplifier's overdrive channel3132. If your drive comes from pedals in front of the amp, the end of the pedal chain works.
Is a reverb pedal better than my amp's built-in reverb?
Not better, but more flexible. A pedal offers more styles than a typical amp's single setting, more control over decay and mix, and independence from the amp itself. Hermida Audio pitches its Reverb pedal as "a simple and effective way to add reverb to your favorite amplifier"12, which is the common case: adding what your amp lacks rather than replacing what it does well.
Are there analog reverb pedals?
Yes, and they almost all use real springs. Anasounds' Element is "a true analog reverb using real springs"10, and Recovery Effects' Endless Summer is an all-analog spring reverb with a built-in boost24. Most reverb pedals are digital, and the Hermida Audio Reverb mixes analog and digital signal paths39.
What does the mix or level knob do on a reverb pedal?
It sets how much reverb you hear alongside your dry signal. On the Quilter Wet Reverb v1, full counter-clockwise is completely dry with no reverb, and full clockwise is about a 50/50 blend of dry and reverb signal23. JET Pedals describes its Mix knob as controlling the overall loudness of the reverb, from minimum counter-clockwise to maximum clockwise6.
