A delay pedal takes your guitar signal, holds it for a moment, and plays it back as a repeat. Stack those repeats and you get anything from a single slapback echo, the kind heard on rockabilly and country records, to long ambient trails that wash behind a chord. It is one of the most widely built effect types in the pedal market: makers from Harley Benton with its budget Digital Delay to boutique builders like JAM Pedals with the Delay Llama all make one12.
At its simplest, a delay pedal is a repeat machine with three decisions to make: how long until the repeat arrives, how many repeats you hear, and how loud they sit against your original signal. The Cmat Mods Deeelay is a good picture of the basic form: a simple digital delay with up to 600 milliseconds of delay time and little else to learn3. From there the type branches into analog, tape-emulating, digital and multi-mode designs, each with its own character and control set.
How delay works: analog, tape and digital
Every delay pedal is doing the same job, holding a copy of your signal and releasing it later, but the three main technologies do it differently, and that difference is what you hear in the repeats.

Analog delay uses bucket brigade device (BBD) chips. The signal is passed along a line of capacitor stages, like a bucket brigade passing water, and the time it takes to travel that line is the delay. Because the signal passes through the chip again with each repeat, the repeats gradually darken and soften. The JAM Pedals Delay Llama mk.3 is an all-analog BBD delay in this tradition2, and PastFX builds the Delay Machine II as a dual MN3005 + MN3101 delay based on a classic circuit4. The Flower Pedals Dahlia Dual Analog Delay takes a hybrid approach: an entirely analog signal path with modern digital control5.
Tape delay records the signal onto a loop of magnetic tape and plays it back from a separate head. Real tape machines added wobble, wow and flutter, and modern pedals often recreate those imperfections digitally. Tone City describes its Tape Machine as a part-analog, part-digital delay pedal built around that sound6, and Dedalo FX pitches the D60 as an analog pedal with a tape-like sound, aimed at ambient textures, soundscapes and slapback7.
Digital delay samples the signal and stores it in memory, so the repeats stay clean and faithful for as long as the delay time allows. The Cmat Mods Deeelay is described by its maker as a super-clean, simple digital delay3, and Retrograve's Reflect Delay V2 is a digital delay aimed at atmospheric and textural sounds8. Some designs mix the two worlds: Cusack Music's Tap-a-Delay is a 750mS digital delay that mixes the original analog signal with the delayed signal9.
The line between analog and digital is not always clean. A pedal can have an analog signal path with digital control, like the Flower Pedals Dahlia5, or a digital engine voiced to imitate tape or BBD repeats, like the Tone City Tape Machine6. Check what the maker says about the signal path, not just the word on the box.
A related effect is worth knowing about because it explains how delay and modulation overlap. A chorus pedal basically works like a delay: it doubles the signal, delays the copy for a few milliseconds, pitches it up and down a few cents, and merges the two back together10. That is why many analog delays add modulation to their repeats, and why a very short delay time with pitch wobble becomes chorus rather than echo.
Styles of delay: analog, tape, digital and multi-mode
Many pedals now carry several delay types in one box, switchable from a knob or a menu. EarthQuaker Devices' Silos merges a digital, analog and tape delay into one compact pedal11. At the larger end, Korg's SDD-3000 PEDAL offers eight distinct delay types: SDD-3000, Analog, Tape, Modern, Kosmic, Reverse, Pitch and Panning12, and Alexander Pedals' Rewind features ten delay engines, TAPE, ANALOG, DIGITAL, PITCH, DUAL, DIFFUSE, REVERSE, DYNAMIC, FILTER and LO-FI, each with its own set of tweakable parameters13. Even compact pedals get in on it: the Flamma FC03 mini analog delay includes three classic delay modes, analog, real echo and tap echo14.
| Pedal | Delay types offered |
|---|---|
| EarthQuaker Devices Silos | Digital, analog and tape in one pedal11 |
| Korg SDD-3000 PEDAL | SDD-3000, Analog, Tape, Modern, Kosmic, Reverse, Pitch, Panning12 |
| Alexander Pedals Rewind | Tape, Analog, Digital, Pitch, Dual, Diffuse, Reverse, Dynamic, Filter, Lo-Fi13 |
| Flamma FC03 | Analog, real echo, tap echo14 |
| Alexander Pedals Radical Delay II+ | Three varied sound modes15 |
Single-voice pedals still make up a large share of the market, and each flavor has its own appeal. Beetronics describes the BeeBeeDee as an analog delay designed to do everything you love about classic echoes16. Gibson's Maestro Discoverer Delay is a modern analog delay pedal17, the JOYO R-10 Nascar Delay is an analog delay pedal18, and the Ibanez ADMINI is an analog delay in compact form19. On the digital side, Nobels' DEL-mini combines a selection of delay tones in a budget-friendly, space-saving format20, and Maneco Labs' Sixteen Seconds Delay Vintage Compact pushes delay time into long, loop-adjacent territory20.
The usual controls: time, feedback and mix
Whatever the technology, most delay pedals share a core control set, and the names are fairly consistent across makers.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Time / Delay Time | Sets how long the wait is before each repeat arrives |
| Feedback / Repeats | Sets how many repeats you hear before they die away |
| Mix / Level | Sets how loud the repeats sit against your dry signal |
| Tone | Shapes the brightness of the repeats |
| Modulation | Adds pitch wobble to the repeats, chorus or vibrato style |
The Delay Llama mk.3 spells out the core three plainly: Time sets delay time, Repeats controls feedback, and Level sets the repeats above the dry signal2. Retrograve's Reflect Delay V2 offers controls for delay time, repeats, mix and tone, to shape everything from short echoes to expansive ambient trails8. The Flower Pedals Dahlia covers Mix, Time, Feedback, Tone, Tap Division and Modulation Depth, per delay, since it runs two delay lines5.
The feedback knob deserves special attention because it is the one that can run away from you. On the DOD Rubberneck Analog Delay, the Repeats knob controls the number of delay repeats heard, and higher settings can create oscillating runaway feedback21. That runaway is a feature for players who chase self-oscillating noise, and a hazard for anyone who twists the knob mid-song without listening first.
Tape-style pedals add controls for the machine's imperfections. The PLUSH Replay Tube Delay includes controls for delay time, mix, wow and flutter, repeats, and a fidelity control22. Wow and flutter are the pitch wobbles of a real tape transport, and a fidelity control lets you dial in how degraded the repeats sound.
Beyond knobs, tap tempo lets you set the delay time by tapping a footswitch in time with the music, and expression control opens up performance tricks. The Dahlia lets you map any combination of parameters to an expression pedal with independent heel and toe positions5.
Where delay goes in the signal chain
Delay placement changes what the repeats sound like more than almost any other decision on your board, because anything in front of the delay gets repeated, and anything after it processes the repeats too.
The general rule from BOSS's signal chain guide: place delay after distortion for cleaner and more even repeats23. A delay in front of a distortion pedal or a cranked amp gets its repeats re-shaped by that gain, which compresses and dirties them. Some players want exactly that, but if even, clear repeats are the goal, delay goes after the drive section.
Reverb comes after delay. Delayed reverb can sound muddy, so it is usually best to place reverb after the delay as the final link in the chain23. If you use a looper, the looper should come before the delay if you want the whole loop washed in delay, creating an ambient, spacey feel, or after delay and reverb if you want each looped layer to keep its original effect setting for more clarity and separation24.

Stereo rigs add another layer. A delay pedal delays and repeats the signal, and sending the original to one amp and the delayed signal a few milliseconds later to the other creates a stereo signal10. That is the same principle a chorus pedal uses to widen a sound, applied to echo instead.
Running delay in an amp's effects loop
An amp's effects loop sits between the preamp and the power amp, which means effects placed there do not get re-amplified by the preamp's distortion. BOSS's guidance is direct: if keeping the delay ultra-clean is a priority, consider using the amp's effects loop23. The alternative is running delay direct into the front of an overdriven amp with the effect level and repeats rolled back23.
Some pedals bring their own loop, in a different sense: an effects loop inside the pedal that lets other pedals process only the repeats. Vein-Tap's Holy Era Tap Tempo Delay has an on-board effects loop that allows you to add other pedals which affect the repeats, and not the original signal25. Put a fuzz or a filter in that loop and only the echoes get treated, while your dry note stays untouched.
Landmark delay pedals
The delay type has a long lineage, and a few designs anchor it. BOSS's DM-2 Delay, introduced in 1981, is described by BOSS as an iconic analog delay pedal26, and its bucket brigade circuit is the template many modern BBD pedals follow. BOSS has carried the line forward with the DM-101 Delay Machine, which the maker calls the ultimate analog delay26. TC Electronic's Bucket Brigade Analog Delay is a tough, compact delay pedal in the same BBD family27.
The Korg SDD-3000 has its own place in the story: the pedal version reproduces the rack unit's delay as its first of eight delay types12. And the tape echo tradition, from the machines the Tone City Tape Machine and PLUSH Replay emulate, runs alongside both622.
Questions to ask when choosing a delay pedal
Before comparing specific models, it helps to know your own answers to a few questions, because they narrow the field fast.

- How much delay time do you need? Slapback needs only a short delay; ambient trails and rhythmic parts need longer. The Cmat Mods Deeelay offers up to 600 milliseconds3, the Cusack Tap-a-Delay 750mS9, and the Maneco Labs Sixteen Seconds Delay stretches far beyond both28.
- Analog character or digital clarity? BBD repeats darken and soften as they stack2930; digital repeats stay clean2930. Multi-mode pedals like the Silos let you switch between both11.
- How many knobs do you want? A three-knob pedal like the Delay Llama covers the basics2; pedals like the Rewind expose ten engines with their own parameters13.
- Do you need tap tempo or expression control? Tap tempo keeps repeats in time with the music; the Dahlia's expression mapping lets one pedal sweep multiple parameters at once5.
- Where will it live? In front of a clean amp, in an amp's effects loop for ultra-clean repeats23, or in a pedal's own loop for treating only the repeats25.
- What size and budget? Mini pedals like the Flamma FC0314 and the Nobels DEL-mini20 trade features for board space and price.
Whatever the answers, the delay market is deep enough that several pedals will fit them, from budget digital units to hand-built analog designs. The pages for each pedal on this site carry the full specifications, control sets and power requirements.
Questions
Should delay go before or after distortion?
After. Placing delay after distortion, rather than in front of an overdriven amp or drive pedal, delivers cleaner and more even repeats. If you run delay into a cranked amp instead, roll the effect level and repeats back. Delay also belongs before reverb in the chain.
Does delay go before or after reverb?
Before. Delayed reverb can sound muddy, so reverb usually works best as the final link in the chain, after the delay, or run through the amp's effects loop. That keeps the repeats distinct instead of smearing them into wash.
What is the difference between analog and digital delay?
Analog delay uses bucket brigade chips that pass the signal along in stages, and each pass of the repeats degrades slightly, which many players hear as warm and dark. Digital delay samples the signal, so repeats stay clean and clear for as long as the delay time allows.
What does the feedback knob do on a delay pedal?
Feedback, often labeled Repeats, controls how many echoes you hear. Low settings give one or two quick repeats; higher settings stack more of them. Pushed far enough, the repeats can build into oscillating runaway feedback that keeps self-repeating.
Can I put a delay pedal in my amp's effects loop?
Yes. If keeping the delay ultra-clean is a priority, the amp's effects loop is a common placement, because the repeats avoid being re-amplified by the preamp's distortion. Running delay into the front of an overdriven amp instead means rolling back effect level and repeats.
What is a bucket brigade delay?
An analog delay built on bucket brigade device (BBD) chips, which pass the signal from one capacitor stage to the next like a bucket line. The chips set the maximum delay time, and the repeats darken as they pass through again and again. Classic examples include the Boss DM-2 and pedals like the JAM Pedals Delay Llama.
