An overdrive pedal is the most widely used dirt effect in electric guitar. It takes your signal and pushes it into breakup: the warm, amp-like crunch you get when a tube amplifier is driven past its clean headroom. Where distortion flattens your tone into a saturated wall and fuzz obliterates the wave entirely, overdrive stays responsive. Pick softly and it cleans up; dig in and it growls. Roll back your guitar's volume knob and the grit recedes.
That responsiveness is what players mean when they call an overdrive "touch sensitive." Death By Audio describes its Interstellar Overdriver as "a true overdrive pedal, designed to blast your amp with your sound," built around a discrete circuit that the maker says is "beautifully transparent" and "all about the natural, wonderful sound" of the instrument1. Not every overdrive aims for transparent: some, like the Tube Screamer family, push the midrange and cut the lows on purpose. But all of them share the same basic job, adding gain in a controlled, dynamic way.
Overdrive is one of the three main dirt types, alongside distortion and fuzz. It is the mildest of the three, and the one that responds most to your picking and volume control. Most overdrive pedals are analog, run on 9V DC center-negative power, and sit early in the signal chain, before delay and reverb.
What an overdrive pedal does to your sound
At its simplest, an overdrive adds harmonic content and sustain to a clean signal. The pedal amplifies your guitar's waveform until it exceeds a ceiling, and everything above that ceiling gets clipped off. The result is a thicker, richer tone with more sustain and a compressed, singing quality on held notes.

How much of that character you get depends on the pedal's design and where you set it. Some overdrives are built to stay nearly invisible, preserving your amp's core tone while adding just an edge. Throneroom Pedals describes its Atlantis as "a light to medium overdrive pedal that brings out the true, natural tone of your guitar and amp," specializing in what the maker calls "uber-transparent tube-like breakup"2. Others lean into color. SoloDallas describes its SVDS Boost as delivering "harmonically rich vintage overdrive with legendary latency, adding unparalleled character and depth to your sound"3, and Fortin says its HexDrive offers "a higher output than a typical OD pedal, with additional headroom and an irregular style of clipping," calling it "an outstanding blend of both boost and overdrive"4.
A few designs make the breakup itself adjustable. On the Death By Audio Absolute Destruction, the Overload control "sets the ceiling at which the pedal overloads": turned fully up the pedal will not overload at all, and sliding it left "pulverizes the sound more rapidly"5. Origin Effects takes a different approach on its Halcyon Blue Overdrive, where Adaptive Circuitry "allows the pedal's boosted midrange to gradually fade away as the pedal cleans up when rolling back the volume knob," so the tone shifts naturally as you ride your guitar's volume6.
One thing worth clearing up early: not every pedal with "overdrive" in its description adds dirt. Orange describes its Vintage Pedal Sustain as "acting like an overdrive for your clean tone," because it "smooths, regulates and evens out your guitar sound, making the soft parts louder and the loud parts softer"7. That is compression, not clipping, and it shows how loosely the word gets used. A true overdrive always involves clipping the signal.
How overdrive works: the clipping circuit
Every overdrive pedal, analog or digital, tube or transistor, creates its sound by clipping: cutting the tops and bottoms off the waveform once it passes a threshold. The shape of that clipping is what separates overdrive from distortion and fuzz, and the details of the circuit are what separate one overdrive from another.
Soft versus hard clipping. Soft clipping rounds off the wave gradually, which reads to the ear as warm, amp-like breakup. Strymon describes the dirty boost mode on its Compadre this way: the boost circuit "increases output level while introducing the soft clipping characteristic of an overdrive pedal"8. Hard clipping slices the wave flat at the ceiling, which sounds more aggressive and closer to distortion.

Symmetrical versus asymmetrical clipping. Symmetrical clipping cuts the top and bottom of the wave identically, producing even, orderly harmonics. TC Electronic says its El Cambo overdrive's "symmetrical clipping overdrive circuit" gives harmonic saturation that is "amazingly fluid and musical sounding"9. Asymmetrical clipping cuts one side of the wave differently from the other, adding odd, more complex harmonics. The Maxon RTD800 shows both ideas in one pedal: its overdrive circuit "features two stages of clipping, a bi-directional clipping diode in the feedback loop of the op-amp, then a single-diode second stage for asymmetrical clipping"10.
Diode choice. The component doing the clipping shapes the feel. Revv says the analog drive stage in its Tilt Overdrive "utilizes LED clipping for high headroom and an open, touch-sensitive response"11. Greer's Southland Harmonic Overdrive uses "two stages of clipping (utilizing different diode types for each stage of clipping)" for more gain12. And on the DIY side, Anasounds' FX Teacher kit includes a clip switch that gives "access to the kind of clipping of the disto-fuzz, from 1N914 diodes (like the original) to your own diodes (via the terminal block) and a position without clipping for a more natural overdrive"1314, which is about the clearest demonstration there is that the diode is the sound.

Some pedals let you cross the boundaries. Browne's ALKENE Nashville Overdrive has an internal More Clip switch that "engages an alternate set of hard clipping diodes, adding extra bite, aggression, and gain"1516, and PedalPCB's Pauper build has a mode switch that "selects between Overdrive, Boost, and Distortion modes"1516.
Overdrive, distortion and fuzz: where the lines fall
The three dirt types differ by degree, not kind. All of them clip the signal; they differ in how hard, how symmetrically, and how much of the original dynamics survive.
- Overdrive clips gently and keeps dynamics. It cleans up when you back off, which is why players use it as a boost as much as a dirt pedal.
- Distortion clips harder and more consistently, with less cleanup and a denser harmonic stack. See the distortion pedals page for the full picture.
- Fuzz clips hardest, reshaping the wave until it is nearly square. The fuzz pedals page covers that territory.
The boundaries are porous in practice. Vertex calls its Dynamic Distortion "a sonic hybrid of the two most iconic distortion pedals in Rock 'n Roll history, the Germanium" fuzz and the TS overdrive17, and its drive control spans "overdrive to fuzz"17. The Empress Multidrive goes further, offering "independent control over the amount of fuzz, distortion, and overdrive that gets added in parallel," each with its own high-pass or low-pass filter17. And IK Multimedia's TONEX Capture can model "distortion, overdrive, fuzz, boost, EQ, and other pedals individually or as part of a complete signal chain"18, which tells you the categories are close enough that one modeling engine can cover them all.
Landmark overdrives and where they came from
Overdrive is an effect with a lineage, and modern pedals name their ancestors openly. Knowing the family lines helps you make sense of the market, because a huge share of current overdrives are descendants of a handful of original circuits.

The most influential is the Tube Screamer, the Ibanez circuit that a long line of builders have borrowed. Mythos describes its Envy Pro Overdrive as "inspired by the most iconic pedal of all time" and "that ever polarizing green stompbox," a Tube Screamer-style green overdrive circuit19. Other makers trace their own lineages: Browne's ALKENE Nashville Overdrive is inspired by the classic "Nashville" overdrives found on the pedalboards of session greats from Tim Pierce to Jerry McPherson201321, and Mythos' Olympus Overdrive is a tribute to the Gainster/Hoochie Mama circuit201321.
The second great line is the Klon Centaur, a legendary overdrive pedal whose circuit other builders openly borrow: Origin Effects says of its Halcyon Gold Overdrive, "We based this pedal on the Klon Centaur because it's an all-time classic"22. The third is the Marshall Bluesbreaker, a circuit Wampler describes as "long-discontinued, long-sought-after" and one that "has spawned many other popular pedals"23. Wampler's own Pantheon Overdrive was inspired by that BB circuit and the many pedals it spawned23.
Beyond those three, there are regional and session-player traditions. Browne's ALKENE Nashville Overdrive is "inspired by the classic 'Nashville' overdrives found on the pedalboards of session greats from Tim Pierce to Jerry McPherson"13, a lineage most players never see on a stage but hear constantly on records. And amp-in-a-box pedals trace back to specific amplifiers rather than pedal circuits: Marshall's DSL Overdrive pedal exists to "unlock the legendary sound of the Dual Super Lead" amp24.
Styles of overdrive: Tube Screamer, Klon, transparent, amp-in-a-box and Bluesbreaker
Because the circuit families sound different, players talk about overdrives by style. The categories overlap, but they are a useful map of what a pedal will do to your rig.
| Style | What it does to your tone | Examples from this site |
|---|---|---|
| Tube Screamer style | Boosts midrange, cuts lows, tight and focused | Ibanez TS9, Boss SD-1 |
| Klon style | Transparent with a mid hump, cleans up well | KLON Centaur, Warm Audio Throne of Tone |
| Transparent | Adds gain without changing your core tone | Death by Audio Interstellar Overdriver, Throneroom Atlantis |
| Amp-in-a-box | Recreates a specific amplifier's overdrive | Marshall DSL Overdrive |
| Bluesbreaker style | Warm, open, slightly compressed low-gain | Wampler Pantheon Deluxe, Beetronics Wannabee |
The lines blur constantly. Beetronics' Wannabee is "a dual overdrive inspired by the Bluesbreaker and Klon"25, and its Custom Shop WB981 version carries the same description26, so one pedal can sit in two columns at once. The Analogman King Of Tone and the Fulltone Full-Drive 3 are other frequently cited members of the transparent-to-midrange middle ground.
Amp-in-a-box is its own conversation. Skreddy Pedals' Hybrid Overdrive is a "versatile overdrive with British amp sound"27, Friedman's Small Box is built to capture a specific amp character, and Marshall now makes pedals for its JCM900 and JVM heads as well as the DSL. If you already own the amp, these pedals are about getting its pushed sound at low volume; if you do not, they are about borrowing it.
Tube and hybrid overdrives
Most overdrives use transistors and op-amps to do their clipping, but a persistent school of design uses actual tubes. TC Electronic's Tube Pilot Overdrive puts a tube in an overdrive pedal2829, and Lovepedal's Overdrive 11 is a tube-powered overdrive from this boutique pedal company29. On the hybrid side, Skreddy Pedals' Hybrid Overdrive is a versatile overdrive with a British amp sound27.
The tube approach is still active. Lovepedal's Overdrive 11 is the latest tube-powered overdrive from this boutique pedal company29. Tube-based designs sit alongside hybrid circuits like Skreddy Pedals' Hybrid Overdrive, a versatile overdrive with a British amp sound27.
Dual overdrives: two circuits in one pedal
Because players so often run two overdrives together, makers have put both in one enclosure. The logic is simple: two gain stages in series, switchable and stackable, with matched levels and one less patch cable.

- The Browne Protein Dual Overdrive is a dual overdrive pedal whose "blue" side later became a stand-alone pedal: Browne's The Carbon Overdrive V2, which the maker says is "inspired by a legendary 'blue' circuit loved by many all over the world"30. Browne says the Carbon "originated as the 'blue side' of the Protein Dual Overdrive" and is now available on its own30. Browne's Ethane Dual Overdrive fuses two of the company's most revered circuits, the Carbon V2 and the Gritador31.
- The Wampler Paisley Deluxe combines "a Paisley Drive and Brian's Underdog circuits into a single pedal"32.
- The Cornerstone Centurio Dual Overdrive offers two completely independent channels in a single, space-saving pedal33.
- The Warm Audio Throne of Tone is essentially two identical overdrives in one pedal34.
Dual overdrives are not the only way to get two sounds from one box. KHDK's Fallout Bass Overdrive "utilizes bi-amp technology with two discrete circuits" that "divides your signal down two paths"35, which is parallel processing rather than series stacking, and KHDK pitches it as "1 pedal doing the job of 2 amps"35.
The usual controls: drive, tone and level
Most overdrives keep their control sets small, and the three-knob format is the standard.
- Drive (or Gain): how hard the pedal pushes the signal into clipping. Low settings add an edge; high settings approach distortion.
- Tone: a simple filter, usually a single knob rolling between darker and brighter.
- Level (or Volume): the pedal's output. Set above unity it becomes a boost that pushes your amp's own input into breakup.
Pedals add controls from there. The Revv Tilt Overdrive carries Treble, Bass, Volume and Gain, splitting the tone control into two bands11. The Friedman Small Box adds "a 2 position side-mounted Gain Structure switch" that lets you "choose from low-focused gain or high gain madness"36. Beetronics' Overhive Custom Shop 420 has a Hive switch that "changes the pedal's overall feel, from tighter and more focused to bigger and smoother"37. And Browne's ALKENE hides its More Clip clipping switch inside the enclosure13, a reminder that internal switches are common on boutique overdrives and worth knowing about before you assume a three-knob pedal has no tricks.
Signal chain placement and power
Placement. The conventional order puts overdrive early: after your tuner and any compressor or pitch effects, and before chorus, delay and reverb. EBS states it plainly for its Billy Sheehan drive: "Try placing it after octave or other pitch effects, and before chorus, delay, and reverb"38. The reason is that time effects reproduce whatever they receive, so dirt into delay gives dirty repeats, while delay into dirt gives a smeared, indistinct wash. Between two overdrives, most players run the tighter, lower-gain one first.
Power. The industry standard is 9V DC, center-negative. Beetronics specifies "9V DC center-negative (standard pedal power)" for the Overhive and notes the power supply is not included394024, and Marshall lists the same for the DSL Overdrive pedal24. Variations matter: the Friedman Small Box "can be powered between 9-18VDC (no battery)"36, and running such a pedal at the higher voltage typically means more headroom and a cleaner feel. Skreddy Pedals accepts "the industry-standard 9v DC plug" and also supports a 9V battery, which disconnects when external power or the input cable is unplugged27.
Always check the polarity and voltage on the pedal or its manual before plugging in. A center-positive supply on a center-negative pedal can damage it, and higher-voltage pedals like the Friedman Small Box (9 to 18VDC) will not behave the same at both ends of that range.
Bypass. True bypass, as on the Friedman Small Box36, removes the pedal's circuit from the signal path entirely when it is off. Buffered bypass leaves a buffer active, which preserves high end over long cable runs. Both approaches have trade-offs, and the buffer pedals page covers them in detail.
Questions to ask when choosing an overdrive
With hundreds of overdrives on the market, a few questions narrow the field fast.

- What do you want it to do? Add an edge to a clean amp, push an already-dirty amp harder, or provide the whole overdrive sound itself? Behringer describes its Zentara Overdrive as transparent, responding well to picking dynamics with high headroom41, which suits the first two; a mid-pushed design suits the third.
- How much gain? Nordvang describes its Custom No.1 overdrive as versatile as either a clean boost or a mid pushed medium gain overdrive42, the do-everything middle ground; Soldano's Super Lead Overdrive Pedal covers higher gain, harmonically rich overdrive and distortion sounds42.
- What is it based on? Knowing whether a pedal is Tube Screamer, Klon, Bluesbreaker or amp-derived tells you most of what it will do to your tone before you plug it in. Mythos calls its Mjolnir a tweaked version of one of the most sought after overdrives of all time, a "K" style pedal43.
- Does it fit your board? Power requirements, voltage range and physical size all matter before you buy.
- Do you want one sound or two? A dual overdrive covers rhythm and lead settings without a second pedal, and Nordvang built its dual version exactly because fans of the No.1 overdrive requested one42.
Published reviews can help with the landscape. One reviewer called the Origin Effects Revival Drive Compact "a 'good choice' pedal and therefore belongs in the top 5 overdrive pedals" and the most versatile of that top five overall44. Makers' own descriptions help you sort the field: Behringer points to the Zentara Overdrive's transparent character and response to picking dynamics45, Nordvang to the No.1's versatility as a clean boost or mid pushed medium gain overdrive46, and Soldano to the Super Lead Overdrive Pedal's higher gain, harmonically rich overdrive and distortion sounds47. Reviews of individual pedals are the best guide once you have shortlisted.
Questions
What is the difference between overdrive, distortion and fuzz?
Overdrive is the mildest of the three: it clips the signal gently and stays responsive to your picking and volume knob, sounding like an amp just breaking up. Distortion clips harder and more consistently for a heavier, saturated tone. Fuzz clips hardest of all, reshaping the wave into a thick, buzzy square-ish shape. Some pedals blur the lines: the Empress Multidrive lets you blend all three in parallel.
Can you stack two overdrive pedals?
Yes, and many players do. Running one lower-gain overdrive into another adds gain in stages while keeping note clarity, which is why dual overdrives like the Browne Protein and Wampler Paisley Deluxe put two circuits in one box. IK Multimedia even sells a two-pedal TONEX ONE bundle for stacking. Start with both gain knobs low and raise them until you hear the amount of breakup you want.
Does an overdrive pedal work on bass?
It can, but a guitar overdrive often thins out the low end. Dedicated bass overdrives solve this: the KHDK Fallout Bass Overdrive splits your signal down two discrete paths with bi-amp technology, and the EBS Billy Sheehan Ultimate Signature Drive runs parallel clean and distorted paths so your fundamental low end survives alongside the grit.
Do overdrive pedals need a 9V power supply?
Most run on 9V DC with a center-negative plug, the standard for pedalboard power supplies. Some accept a range instead: the Friedman Small Box runs on anything from 9 to 18VDC and has no battery option. Others, like Skreddy Pedals' overdrives, also take a 9V battery. Check each pedal's requirements before you buy.
Should overdrive go before or after delay and reverb?
Before. EBS recommends placing a drive pedal after octave or pitch effects and before chorus, delay and reverb, and that ordering works for guitar too. Grit feeding into time effects keeps each echo and reverb tail as dirty as the original note, while the reverse makes repeats smear into mush. Pitch effects first, dirt second, time effects last.
What does a medium-gain overdrive mean?
Gain describes how hard the pedal clips your signal. Low gain gives a light edge, high gain approaches distortion, and medium gain sits in the middle: enough breakup for rhythm parts and solos while still cleaning up when you roll back your volume. Beetronics calls its Overhive a versatile medium-gain overdrive, and Throneroom describes its Atlantis as a light to medium overdrive.
