The short version of what a fuzz pedal does: it pushes your guitar signal through transistor gain stages until the waveform is heavily clipped, producing a thick, sustaining, harmonically loaded tone that sits beyond what most distortion or overdrive pedals do. Classic designs like the Fuzz Face are known for a distinctive fuzz/distortion sound1, and the family includes Tone Bender-style circuits, Big Muff-style circuits, octave fuzz, and gated and modern fuzz. Below the catalog on this page you will find every fuzz pedal covered on the site.
How fuzz works: transistors in the gain stage
The technical difference between fuzz and other gain pedals is the component doing the amplifying. As Dunlop puts it, "unlike overdrive and distortion pedals, fuzz pedals use transistors to instead of op-amps to add gain to your signal," and those transistors "add a ton of harmonic content as soon as they start to amplify"2. Inside pedals generally, gain is created by active components, most commonly JFET and MOSFET transistors3.
A classic example is the Fuzz Face. Analysis from Georgia Institute of Technology, describing the circuit per R. G. Keen, explains that its two transistors form a voltage feedback biasing circuit4. The transistor choice matters: the analysis found the default simulated transistor gains were 70 for Q1 and 120 for Q2, a "sweet spot" determined by musicians4. A technical breakdown of a germanium fuzz at GuitarPCB describes the same architecture in general terms: a double PNP transistor stage with a feedback network, where the best transistor match uses low gain in the first stage (Hfe around 80) and high gain in the second (Hfe around 120)5.

Makers choose transistors for character, not just gain. Hudson Electronics loads its FUZZ with three N.O.S. transistors selected and tested for gain and leakage8. Southampton Pedals uses low-gain silicon transistors in its Boosted Fuzz specifically so it "retains a lot of the sonic characteristics of germanium fuzzes"9. Some pedals add stages on demand: the Fuzzlord FW70's BOOST control adds "an additional transistor gain stage boost and more output/saturation"10, and the VFE Fuzz Duo's FUZZ knob sets the gain of the second transistor stage, with a TR1 switch that selects between a medium-gain germanium transistor and a high-gain silicon transistor in the first stage11.
Two quirks of the transistor approach are worth knowing:
- Temperature sensitivity. Germanium transistors are sensitive to changes in temperature, which affects the gain structure of the circuit, as EarthQuaker Devices' Joe Golden explains12.
- Power source character. Golden also addresses the common claim that "batteries sound better in my fuzz pedal than my 'Wall Wart' DC power supply," attributing it to thermal instability and the saggy power from an aging battery12.
Not every fuzz relies on transistors alone for its character. The EHX Percolator has a DRIVE/FUZZ toggle: in FUZZ mode the clipping diodes are engaged for heavy fuzz, while in DRIVE mode the diodes are disengaged and the pedal acts more like a transistor overdrive and distortion13. That switch is a useful demonstration of where fuzz sits relative to other gain effects: same circuit, different clipping.
Fuzz versus distortion and overdrive
The distinction is one of degree and mechanism. Overdrive and distortion pedals typically use op-amp gain stages with diode clipping, which keeps the original character of the guitar and amp mostly intact. Fuzz uses transistors as the gain element, and the transistor itself contributes the harmonic overload2. The effect is more extreme: waveforms get squared off, sustain increases, and the guitar's clean dynamics largely disappear at full settings.
Some products sit deliberately on the boundary. Analog Man describes the ZVEX Machine as a "distortion generator," a fuzz for fuzzes, intended to be put in front of other fuzz and distortion pedals when distortion is your main sound and you can never get enough14. The Percolator's DRIVE mode is another example of a fuzz circuit dialed back toward overdrive territory13. If you are comparing categories, the distortion and overdrive pages cover the gentler ends of the gain spectrum.
Styles of fuzz
The fuzz family breaks into recognizable styles, and most pedals on the market are variations on one of them.

- Fuzz Face-style. The classic two-transistor, voltage feedback circuit4, known for its distinctive fuzz/distortion sound1. Its circuit was relatively simple compared to later fuzz pedals, and that simplicity contributed to its appeal1.
- Big Muff-style. Sustain-heavy stacked clipping. Sonicake describes its Fazy Cream as delivering "a classic muff sound"15.
- Vintage-style compact fuzz. The MOOER Blue Faze is a compact, vintage-style fuzz pedal16, and Animals Pedal's Rust Rod Fuzz is a fuzz pedal with a smooth, old-school charm17.
- Wall-of-fuzz hybrids. Animals Pedal's Fishing Is As Fun As Fuzz combines a thick "wall of fuzz" tone with a distortion-like tone that cuts through18.
- Gated and glitchy fuzz. Collision Devices describes its FZ simply: "It fuzzes, it gates"19. Oneder Effects calls its Fuzzhausen "the chaotic fuzz pedal that took the wrestling and pedal world by storm"20.
- Experimental fuzz. The ZVEX Fuzz Factory is, in Analog Man's words, "the flagship Z. Vex pedal, a five-knob wonder that often expresses itself whether you are playing or not"14. ZVEX's Machine pushes further, described by its maker as "a truly unique fuzz"21.
- Multi-voice and modular fuzz. Jackson Audio's FUZZ takes "faithful recreations of historic fuzz circuits and brings them together in one modular" pedal22. Walrus Audio's Fundamental Fuzz is a 3-mode aggressive fuzz23.
- Minimal fuzz. At the small end, MAS Effects' Ridiculously Tiny Fuzz is a Bazz Fuss circuit in a tiny enclosure24, and Jeds Peds' The Fuzzy Low is a big-sounding, fuzz-rich pedal with just two controls25.
What the usual controls do
Most fuzz pedals keep the control set small, and the names are fairly consistent across makers. The table below collects the controls described by the makers of several current pedals.
| Control | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Fuzz | Sets the gain of a transistor stage; more means more saturation | VFE Fuzz Duo: sets the gain of the 2nd transistor stage, and rolling back your guitar's volume knob cleans things up in a hurry11 |
| Volume / Output | Sets the pedal's output level | Mythos Golden Fleece: "Controls the output of the pedals. The rest is up to you"26 |
| Tone | Shapes the harmonic balance | Way Huge Smalls Doom Hammer: Output, Tone and Fuzz dials tailor the pedal's velvety harmonics to your rig27 |
| Bias | Fine-tunes the transistor bias, usually on germanium circuits | Tru-Fi Two Face: Bias control for fine-tuning the germanium side28 |
| Input Gain | Sets how hard the circuit is hit | Tru-Fi Two Face: Input Gain control28 |
| Boost | Adds an extra gain stage | Fuzzlord FW70: adds an additional transistor gain stage and more output/saturation10 |
| Transistor select | Switches between transistor types | VFE Fuzz Duo TR1: medium-gain germanium or high-gain silicon in the first stage11 |
| Mode / toggle | Changes the clipping arrangement | EHX Percolator: DRIVE/FUZZ toggle engages or disengages the clipping diodes13 |
Two practical notes on controls. First, output level can be deceptive: Analog Man warns that the Fuzz Factory is "WAY LOUD even at 1/4 of the way up" the volume knob14. Second, the guitar's volume knob is effectively a fuzz control. VFE's manual makes this explicit for the Fuzz Duo: crank the FUZZ knob for saturation, then "roll back on your guitar's volume knob to clean things up in a hurry"11. Way Huge similarly suggests a low Fuzz setting on the Doom Hammer "for the most delightful crunch"27.
Where fuzz goes in the signal chain
Placement matters more with fuzz than with most effects, because of how fuzz circuits read the signal feeding them.
JHS Pedals' guidance is direct: "placing a buffer before a fuzz pedal will cause the fuzz to sound thin or weak," because fuzzes need to see a high impedance signal at the input. It is generally best to place buffers or buffered-bypass pedals after fuzz pedals in your signal chain29.
Mythos Pedals says the same thing from the product side for its Golden Fleece: it is best before buffers, including buffered tuners and the buffered effect loops of switching systems, because buffers "kill the response and drastically change the voice"26.
On the tuner question specifically, BOSS's signal chain guide recommends putting the tuner first in the chain, before all other pedals30. Where that tuner is not true bypass, the guide's advice is to place fuzz pedals before the tuner and remember to turn the fuzz off when tuning30. A true-bypass tuner avoids the conflict entirely.
Other placement points:
- Amp and cab sim pedals most commonly go at the end of the chain, where the signal is routed to a PA system, audio interface or headphones30, so a fuzz sits before them.
- Splitting a fuzz across the chain. The Flower Pedals Lupine Dual Fuzz has extra input and output jacks, 2x input and 2x output, so each of its two fuzz sides can be placed at a different point in your signal chain31.
If you are building a first board, the buffer and tuner pages cover the pedals that interact with fuzz most.
Questions to ask when choosing a fuzz
The catalog below is large, so a few questions can narrow it.

- What range of tones do you need? Hudson Electronics describes its FUZZ as covering everything from big, thick, smooth fuzz tones to "super bright ice pick to the forehead tones," gritty to smooth, spanning 60s to modern fuzz8. A multi-mode pedal such as Walrus Audio's 3-mode Fundamental Fuzz23 or Jackson Audio's modular FUZZ with its recreations of historic circuits22 covers more ground than a single-voice circuit.
- Germanium or silicon? Germanium gives the vintage character and temperature sensitivity12; silicon is stabler, and low-gain silicon can be chosen to mimic germanium behavior, as in the Southampton Boosted Fuzz9. The VFE Fuzz Duo lets you switch between both in one pedal11.
- How much control do you want? A two-knob pedal like The Fuzzy Low25 or the single-control Mythos Golden Fleece26 is simple; a five-knob Fuzz Factory opens up self-oscillating territory252632.
- How much room do you have? The MOOER Blue Faze is compact16, and the MAS Effects Ridiculously Tiny Fuzz is about as small as the format gets24.
- Do you want gating or chaos? If a gated, stuttering texture is the goal, the Collision Devices FZ gates as it fuzzes19, and the Fuzzhausen is built to be chaotic20.
- Guitar or bass? MAS Effects builds its Tiny Fuzz: Spirits for guitar and bass33, and the bass pedals page covers the wider bass side of the catalog.
Building and modifying fuzz
Fuzz is one of the most buildable effects. The Fuzz Face's circuit was relatively simple compared to later fuzz pedals, and its simplicity contributed to its appeal1. The Bazz Fuss circuit is a popular DIY project, and MAS Effects sells a beginner pedal kit based on it, described as "a pretty gnarly fuzz pedal"34. Jeds Peds offers a DIY fuzz pedal kit in The Fuzzy Low25, and GuitarPCB publishes a guide to building a germanium fuzz with details like the two-stage gain matching described above5. For a first build, the MAS Effects Beginner Pedal Kit page covers the kit in full.
Questions
What is the difference between fuzz and distortion?
Fuzz was the first type of distortion to appear in pedal form, originally designed to sound like a faulty amp or a damaged speaker2. Where overdrive and distortion pedals typically use op-amps to add gain, fuzz pedals use transistors, which add a large amount of harmonic content as soon as they start to amplify2. The result is a more extreme, saturated, squared-off tone than most distortion pedals produce.
Why do fuzz pedals sound better loud?
Fuzz circuits are driven hard by design, and output level is part of the voice: Analog Man warns that the Fuzz Factory is way loud even at a quarter of the way up the volume knob14. Some germanium fuzzes also change character with their power source, since batteries can sound better than wall-wart DC supplies because of thermal instability and the saggy power from an aging battery12.
Should a fuzz pedal go before or after the tuner?
BOSS recommends placing fuzz pedals before the tuner if the tuner is not true bypass, and turning the fuzz off when tuning; a true-bypass tuner can go first in the chain30. The underlying issue is buffering: a buffer before a fuzz makes it sound thin or weak, because fuzzes need to see a high impedance signal at the input29.
Can fuzz pedals be used on bass?
Yes. MAS Effects describes its Tiny Fuzz: Spirits as a fuzz pedal for guitar and bass33. Any fuzz can be tried on bass, though circuits that thin the low end may need a blend or EQ afterward to keep the fundamental intact.
Are fuzz pedals easy to build or modify?
Many are. The Fuzz Face circuit was relatively simple compared to later fuzz pedals, and its simplicity contributed to its appeal1. The Bazz Fuss circuit is a popular DIY project and the basis of the MAS Effects beginner pedal kit34, and Jeds Peds offers a DIY fuzz kit in The Fuzzy Low25.
